Anyone have experience with this hatchery? I want silkies and am having a hard time finding them. I live in upstate SC and this hatchery is in CA. A bit concerned about distance and condition of chicks upon arrival. If anyone knows of a reputable farm/hatchery in my area I would love any info!
Thanks!!

This is just my experience - I recently ordered four Faverolles as this was the only hatchery that had them available. Shipping went well, they had heat packs and came overnight to Texas. However, one died within hours of receipt and another was shipped with fairly severe splay leg (possibly some other ailment?) and died the next day. The other two are doing well!

I will say though that this could happen with any hatchery that ships. The process was great, just disappointed two didn’t make it.

Yes I just actually spoke to them trying to gain more info. They do have a location in TN which is closer. Thanks so much for info! Much appreciated😁

I was getting ready to tell you this but glad you figured it out on your own. :) They're a great hatchery and have several locations. It depends on stock at the time of shipment, but from what I understand, they'll try their best to ship from a location that's closest to you.

I ordered 9 cochins and 9 silkies from Valley Hatchery -- received them on a Friday afternoon via USPS. One died in transit. Not abnormal. 13 more died over the weekend! I only have 4 left! The chicks were lethargic, and I suspect diseased (parasites).
I have experience raising chicks (safe & clean brooder box, warm heat lamp set at 100, clean water, organic starter feed, pine shavings for bedding, etc.), and I can tell you that they didn't die from lack of care.
This was my second order from Valley Hatchery. They refused to replace any of the chicks. I tried to leave a Google review, but cannot find where to leave one. So I am leaving one here. Consider this a 1-star rating. I won't be using them again. Too costly.

Thanks so much for responding to my post! I called them because I couldn't find their NPIP certification on the state site. They told me they were but they were definitely not listed. I am having the same problem trying to et quality silkies. I would contact your local poultry extension agent. They can refer you to local breeders . Good luck and so sorry you had that happen! They definitely should have guaranteed health at least for 48 hrs.

Coming back to update this: out of the two that I had left, one is a cockerel so I only got one faverolle pullet that survived 😢

Sad to hear they won’t address the losses. That’s a lot of chicks to lose within 48 hours.

Wow, I know that was a hard loss in more ways than one! I'm really sorry for you! It seems very abnormal for Valley Hatchery. They usually have excellent chicks and customer service, though getting an occasional roo happens with all hatcheries, and nearly all hatcheries send a couple of extra just in case there's a roo that got mixed in or loss in route.

Just curious, how long ago was this?

I just received my bantam Rhode Island Reds (7 ordered) and bantam Easter Egger chicks (3 ordered). I only lost one RIR in shipping, but one extra of each breed was included. The loss appeared to have been caused by the heating pad somehow falling on it during shipping. Otherwise they are all fine so far. I'm in Ocala, FL so that's a good distance to ship as well. It's my first time ordering from them and I'm happy with the results.
