I have a product called "Vitamins A&D ointment", will this be okay to use on their combs in place of vaseline to protect them from frostbite?

A&D is superior to vaseline based products for diaper rash, can't see why not. Petrolatum is actually not very good for human skin over long term use.

A&D works great for adult issues too. Like runner's rash, or other sweat/friction irritation. I keep some in my army travel kit.

I would totally use A&D - even before I'd use vaseline. Heck, anything safe enough for a baby bootie is certainly safe enough for the chickie's comb.
I like to use it on my hands after a day of working in the gardens.

I'm not familiar with bag balm. But I do know that you have to watch out for products with ingredients that end in "cane."
I'm remembering Speckled when she lost her Hawkeye to a product containing "benzocane."

ETA: correction on dangerous ingredients.
