Welcome... to Chicken Park

All 4 of them lay blue/green eggs.

I got rid of the Barred Rocks. I'm going on a trip and the way the timing was going to work, I would end up leaving them (with a chicken sitter) after a very short integration period and that felt like a recipe for disaster.

I told myself I would wait a year but there is a very, very good chance that will change once I get back. We shall see.

But 4 laying birds are lots of fun. Cleo sings the loudest egg song of the group and she frequently sings just before she lays instead of after but I'm sure with age she'll figure it out.

I'm really hoping to have a dozen eggs for both my mother-in-law and sister-in-law at Easter. I should.

Only 3 of my girls do the egg song at all and they all do it before and during laying, but not after 🤦‍♂️😆

Where has the time gone?! I have officially been able to give away eggs to friends and family and man, that just feels so good! Right now their favorite place to lay is in the coop but I'm sure they'll figure it out soon.

We've had multiple days where every girl laid so that was pretty cool.

I'm thinking of adding in a couple chickens later this summer, take us up to 6 total, and then sit there for a few years.

Congratulations on getting eggs now! 🥚 It can help to leave fake eggs in the nest boxes to entice them to lay there instead of other areas of the coop or run.

I actually witnessed the egg song working as intended the other day!

While the girls were out foraging, Magrat started clucking frantically and slowly making her way toward the run/coop. She's very bottom of the pecking order and at first nobody was paying attention to her so I started escorting her to the nest boxes. Then Aliss (top hen... Well, technically pullet still) booked it over to go with us. Once in the run, Aliss hopped up first into the coop to check out the nest boxes. After a minute she poked her head out, like, "all clear!" and Magrat went in. Aliss stayed with her for about 5 minutes or so and I went back into the garage. Then Aliss came out and went back to the rest of the flock, leaving Magrat to do her thing.

Not long after, I heard the egg song and went back outside. Magrat was standing outside the run, on her tippy toes, singing loud and looking around for her "sisters". And just as I was about to escort her back to the flock myself, here comes Aliss again to do the job!

It was such a cool interaction!
