What caused my hen to die. Are my other birds in danger of the same thing?

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)

Red sex link, 2 years old, maybe a bit thin but she has always been pretty honey. 5-6lbs

2) What is the behavior, exactly.

I found her in the nest box drooling a clear thick liquid out of her beak wheezing. She couldn’t breath. I scooped her up and ran inside calling for people to help me. She started freaking out and flailing. I stoped on the steps half way up and the liquid became brown tinted and she couldn’t breath she flailed her neck around struggling while coughing up this brown yellow clear liquid and then she passed. I couldn’t do anything. I didn’t know what to do. I noticed some egg yolk dripping out of her butt. I think an egg broke inside her she hadn’t been laying neither has her twin sister for a while I thought it was the heat but maybe not. When they do lay the eggs have been misshapen and thin shelled. They are always given free choice calcium and a layer feed. But I don’t know what caused the mucus stuff and the not breathing- I think an egg might have broken inside her? All birds have had on and off diarrhea that was cured and firmed up by a couple rounds of probiotic powder mixed in yogurt. I took them to get checked for worms and the vet said they were clear even tho they were having diarrhea. This has been off and on for 3 months ish the diarrhea. The no egg laying for the two twins one deceased and on still alive started at the end of winter. They layer profusely all winter long then stopped when it started to get into spring.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?

I didn’t know it until last night but I scrolled back in camera footage and saw two nights ago she spent the night in the nest box. Only the night. And then yesterday she went about her day normal and this is how I saw her when I went out and fed them and at night last night she went back in the nest box- this is when I ran down stairs and noticed something was wrong grabbed her and took her in and it all happened within 3 minutes. I didn’t see her going in the day before in the nest box because she started out of the roost and moved late to the box that first day. Then the next day she acted normal during the day so I left thinking nothing was wrong.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?

Everyone has been laying a little less but her and her twin sister have been laying insanely less and when they do lay it’s odd shaped misshapen HUGE eggs that are thin. So yes one hen currently alive is still laying weird. Diarrhea is still off and on- it gets fixed when I give probiotics.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.

No

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.

I have no idea.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.

Freshwater 24/7 available, grubblies layer feed, free choice grit and oyster shell, black soldier fly larvae as treats and yogurt with probiotic, electrolyte powder and rooster booster vitamin.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.

Normal sometimes to diarrhea other times

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?

Yogurt with a HEAVY dose of probiotics, roosterbooster vitamin liquid, and electrolyte with lactobasilic something in it all mixed together.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?

I am going to take her still alive twin into the vet just to get checked out again but I really want to know what caused the death of her deceased twin Lucille and if I should be worried for my other babies. I am not doing a necropsy she is being cremated and returned to me. I couldn’t stand the thought of her being all cut up like that.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use

Sweet pdz in poop boards, pine pellet bedding on floor, DE and first Saturday line in both of the above. Nest boxes have pine flakes and those pads that you get from Amazon that are like a stringy nest material I put nesting box herbs in the nest box too. The run has cypris mulch in it and it decomposes naturally and I top off.

By the info you gave, you obviously take excellent care of your hens, and I am very sorry you lost her. I agree with what @Tookie said above. In addition, you may already know that red sexlinks are notorious for dying young from various reproductive problems. I understand your distaste at having her necropsied, but unfortunately a necropsy would be the only way to know why she died. Same as experienced people here, even your vet can only give you an educated guess without a necropsy.

It sounds like she may have had sour crop and aspirated.
They're probably laying less because of the heat.
They have diarrhea most likely because they're drinking a lot of water.
Keep an eye on all your chickens and watch for any odd behavior.
So you still think sour crop even tho she had egg coming out of her? I just don’t understand that part? Thank you for your guidance

I have one other red sex link- I am very worried. If something else like this happens I will do a necropsy then. So you still think sour crop even tho her crops was empty and she had egg coming out of her butt?

If her vent was draining egg yolk/lash egg/infection, that was likely the ultimate reason for her death. The fact your hen had stopped laying also points to a possible reproductive issue, since healthy red sexlinks lay nearly daily, no matter the time of year. The heat could also have been a contributing factor. Their little bodies are bred to produce an egg every day, and any additional stress can send them over the edge.. The fact her eggs were misshapen is yet another clue to a reproductive malfunction. But again, a necropsy is the only way to know the cause of death for sure.

She most likely had a reproductive issue, and reproductive issues can cause sour crop. Her crop may have been empty because she spat up a bunch. Not quite sure about the egg coming out of her, but it probably was a reproductive issue that caused the egg to be like that.
