What did you do in the garden today?

I got a feeling that the fruit flies won't be attacking my tomatoes this year. I think they are attracted to the new UV Zapper that I hung outside. I saw a lot of dead fruit flies around the zapper. I think this zapper and cheap bait I got from amazon is way better than the expensive, and hard to clean Dyna Trap.

I can walk around my back yard without a shirt and without getting any mosquito bites, so I know it's worth its weight in gold. This brand is called AMUFER bug zapper, they have created a new type of UV light that really attracts mosquitoes.

I leave the bottom catch pan off and let the dead bugs fall into my fish tank. Once in a while when I am walking by, I blow on the electric coils to clean off the bugs and hardly use the small brush that comes with it.

Does it get good insects too?
I remember when this type came out decades ago, the were saying as many good bugs as bad got zapped.

I hear you.
I'm tired of winter already too.

And a hawk got a pullet that had just started laying today. Over 40 hens and one of 3 that are laying has to loose her head. :hit
I lost my only Silkie pullet to a hawk a few month ago. She was so sweet and was my son's favorite. So I had to order 3 more Silkies for him next year. My coop is so full now! At least Silkies will not roost high with the other girls. Hopefully they will not be bullied too much, or I have to make a new coop just for them. :hmm

It's strange that 3 of my 7 month pullets started laying at the end of the year when day light was shortest. They usually start either in fall or will wait for spring.

I used to keep making grow out coops, but I kept keeping an extra boy and filling the coop 😂 ....I guess the hawk is helping with the chicken math.
I too was surprised when they started laying. I hadn't gotten an egg since the beginning of November.

This zapper has an amazing new type of uv. The one I got from my local Lowes a long time ago didn't clear the mosquitoes like this one does. Also, the mosquito bait I posted is way cheaper than the ones sold locally and works better. I haven't changed it for a long time and still no mosquitoes. I won't change it unless I get bit.

It's also easy to clean in comparison to the more expensive DYNA mosquito trap. Cleaning the DYNA trap is a major event for me because the spiders make their home inside the electrical part, so I have to take it apart to clean.

What are good insects besides bees? I never see bees get zapped in this zapper. Mostly moths, mosquitoes, stink bugs, occasional lizard and fruit flies.

Only 15 degrees at 1pm and the winds have it feeling like 6. Even the hens didn't want out. I can't blame them. They like their can heater. LOL
I've got one Dominique 4.5 years old that's going south. DH, who takes care of livestock when he's home during the day on school breaks, said she's been mopey for the last few days.
Today she was under the coop ramp in a lump.
Geesh, had he said something, I would have brought her in sooner for hospice care. So now she's in the shop, which is 45'. Has a panel heater, medicated water and some seeds and bedding.
She might be gone today or tomorrow, but at least I know she's comfortable and not being picked on.
The Dominique's are the weakest breed I've ever had on the ranch, next to the leghorn layers- short lived.
