What did you do in the garden today?

Drafty Windows! Ugh. We had an old house, tall ceilings, a single pane window at top of stairs. Single pane windows throughout the home actually. In the winter, that big single pane window would create an actual flow of air that you could feel flowing down the stairs. Not bc it was drafty (poor seal) but the indoor air would hit the window, cool down, fall bc it was cooler, and flow down the stairs. We had to replace that window. But the whole house was generally cold due to the old style of non insulated walls, so during really cold spells we would wear hat and gloves to bed.

Our second house had double pane windows but original to the house, 25 years old. Worked fine, could have been updated, but waaaay to $$ as we did get an estimate from one of the big companies. It was a shocking amount.

This current house has generally smaller windows, all on first (and only) floor. It was definitely drafty in a few spots. So husband pulled off the trim around one large window in front of house, which gets the full force of winter winds. No wonder it was drafty…they had stuffed loose chunks of insulation around the window and kept it in with the trim. Out came the random insulation, vacuum out the debris, and used window spray foam to fill in gaps all around, add back the trim and it made a huge difference. We repeated this process to all the windows in the house. Much much better!!
When I was a teenager, we moved into a very old house. Plaster walls with no insulation. Single pane windows. That house was FREEZING in the winter time. It was so cold in there that we'd have to run additional propane heaters in various rooms (living room, kitchen, bedrooms, etc) just to make them functional. I hated that house. It was miserable... We didn't last more than a couple of years before moving again.

I found some Yukon gold potato seeds that I bought maybe 4 years ago. I just put all the seeds in water. I will divide them up into a small 12 cell domed tray tomorrow morning. They probably won't hatch. I never grew them from seed before.
I tried turmeric rhizomes, nothing sprouted yet.
I experimented with leaf bags- threw some dirt on the top of the leaves, threw jerusalem artichokes in 2 bags, carrot tops in the other. I wanted to see if they would grow in 90% leaves. We've had sunny weather in the PNW and sure enough they are sprouting even with the bags closed!
Zinnia seeds germinating in trays.
Can't find the verbena seeds I just received 😪
Was thinking of planting something just for the hens - they seem pretty happy as is.

I'm using those and a nevo light. They are just loving my house plants! I have a room with some big plants and that's where they are really concentrated. So frustrating.
You could try a systemic insecticide. Bonide 951. I use imaclorprid. Use it as a soil drench. I cannot get to the picture. Crazy computer.

This is the brand of systemic I use. Darn computer was only showing photo numbers.

G’morning all. Got sweet potatoes in soil under the grow light to start slips. I’ve decided to use up some lattice around the garden to shade the beds in addition to whatever I decide for shade from above. We have an old umbrella frame, I might use that with some shade cloth. Waiting for the sun and there’s some rain that pass soon.

Funny, I did the same with my butternut squash on Friday. I turned all mine into butternut squash soup!
I should have done the same. Mine had gotten pretty stringy since I put it in the house over a month ago trying to get around to processing it. Too warm. It'll all be soup eventually. At least it's still edible!
