What did you do in the garden today?

I had to clean the outside brooder in between showers. First time the youngest chicks touched the ground!
Nothing like rain to get the bush beans to produce! They are in raised planters so I don’t kill my back!
I think the tomatoes on patio are finally turning! Lemon variety. But do you see the black dots? 😔 it’s hard to grow without getting mold bc we are so wet.

I've read the same thing. And I've also read that they are good companion plants because the alliums repels tomato bean pests. So... who to believe??? LOL.

I'll report back on how it pans out this fall.

It's 4:45am and almost light enough out to pick the bolting collards. Time to get to work.

Just got a deal on canning jars, Walmart. Bought 6 doz.

Them saying they charge 25$ for a dozen 8 oz jars is INSANE! 14$ max here. I saw they (Walmart) also carries the superb brand now too for those of you that shop there or online there.

Yeah, that's totally ridiculous, although I did see the same exact jars for sale on Amazon for $42 per dozen. Caveat emptor.

Ugh... The past 24 hours has been a whirlwind. Late yesterday evening, I was putting out some rat bait and noticed the cockerel chicks were huddled in the corner of their coop. One in particular was hardly moving at all. I decided to take a closer look and found him severely injured. All the feathers had been ripped off his back. And the back of his head was ripped completely open and bleeding badly. I did my best to quickly clean him up and put him in a quarantine pen for a few days.

I have 7 adult roosters in the bachelor pen. Several weeks ago, I put 5 baby roos in there too. They are 10 weeks old today. The adults have never bothered them at all... But a week or so ago, I noticed that some of the adult roos were fighting. Nothing too terrible... Just looked like some pecking order jousts. A few bloody combs but nothing really bad. When I pulled out the injured chick, I realized several of the adults were also missing a lot of feathers at the back of their heads. No one had anything like this earlier that morning when I fed everyone. I don't know exactly which roo was the culprit but I suspected 2 roos that were about 8 months old.

Anyway, I decided to go ahead and cull ALL the adult roos in the bachelor pen except 1. We were out until nearly midnight processing them all. Today I've spent the day pressure cooking, deboning, and canning it all. I'm exhausted.... And still need to go out and respray more kaolin clay on the squash plants.

Coming to the end of the peas, will plant again for a fall crop, started pulling blackberries and some of the potatoes, beans are starting to come on. Working on putting the permanent netting over the blueberries, cabbages are ready for harvest and will become sauerkraut. Will be planting cabbage again later this summer. And on it goes, soon canning will be in full swing:wee
