What did you do in the garden today?

I'm done gardening for the day. Three raised beds are almost cleared of plants. Beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower and summer squash were grown in this bed this summer.

This will be next year's tomato bed (with garlic on the far end). All the herbs will need to be moved to their new home soon. I will probably dig most of the grass-like crocosmia plant out and replant starts in places outside of the garden.

Tomato plant graveyard...

The butternut squash need to finish ripening and curing in the garden. I'm leaving one or two parsley plants for the pollinators next year.

The small bed still has fall-crop kale, collards and carrots, but I don't think they'll do much so I might rip those out too.

My chickens have a lot of stuff to pick through. I think one of them found a frog to eat. I learned that they'll eat zinnia leaves.

I found where the new egg laying pullets were hiding their eggs, despite there being 10 nest boxes in the coop, run and barn. Piled in the alpacas outdoor hay feeder.
I have genius birds. TBF though, they haven't seen the big girls doing it in boxes as we've been molting for weeks.

Weeding, weeding and more weeding of the firebreaks. Then I went back and sprayed whatever stragglers I missed.

89 today, cooler tomorrow and Monday before we're back up to the upper 80s again by the end of the week.

I live in the Midwest and it hasn't rained in 2 months here which is highly unusual. In spite of that my garden has done pretty well surprisingly. Frosts are coming this week so starting to pull up some plants. Okra and tomatillas were cleaned up today. Pulled my dried Jade bush bean plants up for next year's seed. They are the best bush bean imo. Picked more zucchini, party pan and tomatoes. Trying to enjoy these last days soaking in the sun because before I know it the cold will be here!

My pepper is doing well as can be. I'm going to nurture it as long as I can.

Weird weather, 40s overnight but it felt like upper 80s today at one point. Still dry, 2 acres of crunchy as ya walk & barespots. I see just how many ants live here...Holy moly, ALOT OF ANTS! Quite the variety, too.

I Picked okra & more tomatoes today. I had left 5 ears of corn on the stalks, to hopefully grow larger, but the plants themselves are not so green, and the corncobs did not grow much. I picked them & figured the chickens will love them.

Well, check this out...One has that "special stuff" goin on.

I broke some funky looking kernels open & they were nasty inside, as you can see.

I did taste a normal looking kernel on the other end of that cob, out of curiosity, and it had the flavor of corn & faint mushroom! I threw the funky parts into the fire pit & the chickens ate the rest that looked like corn should. 🌽 I know that crazy stuff is considered a delicacy, but not in this gal's mind. I will pass. Some things are just not appealing or appetizing. Moldy looking Anything is just not for me.

It's raining! :wee

I think I'm going to pick the habaneros tomorrow. We have 4 nights of frost coming, and I'm just not going to chance it.

I'll cover up the beans, just to see if they make it. In the pursuit of knowledge.

I need to plant my garlic sometime next week. I have it on the calendar for the 15th, but that has to be a bit negotiable. I've planted it as late as November 1, so I'm not feeling to pressured. I really want to get the compost on the soil before I plant the cloves. I want to work some of it in, and then pile more on top.

This is actually something people harvest and eat on purpose. I'm sure I've had it on accident since we literally have.... 20+ Mexican restaurants here in my town. I'm not joking. And this is not a large town.
