The temp got up to 45 degrees today. I was going to go out and mulch some leaves to layer under some thick cardboard to try to kill some weeds in the garden ahead of spring but life had other plans. One of my very first hens came down sick... She will be 8 yrs old in March. I brought her inside to figure out what was wrong only to realize she had bad water belly. Her breathing was pretty labored and she refused to eat or drink. So I gave her a peaceful, warm afternoon inside and then took her to the vet who put her to sleep humanely. I did not want to put her through the trauma of draining her belly just to give her a few more months in cold, crappy weather. The vet confirmed the water belly and said otherwise she looks really good for her age. Poor girl.
