What did you do in the garden today?

The temp got up to 45 degrees today. I was going to go out and mulch some leaves to layer under some thick cardboard to try to kill some weeds in the garden ahead of spring but life had other plans. One of my very first hens came down sick... She will be 8 yrs old in March. I brought her inside to figure out what was wrong only to realize she had bad water belly. Her breathing was pretty labored and she refused to eat or drink. So I gave her a peaceful, warm afternoon inside and then took her to the vet who put her to sleep humanely. I did not want to put her through the trauma of draining her belly just to give her a few more months in cold, crappy weather. The vet confirmed the water belly and said otherwise she looks really good for her age. Poor girl. 😭

I’m sorry to hear that. Our oldest hens are just getting to 7 years old. Two are still quite lively, one has slowed/mellowed more noticeably but seems fine.

Another batch of pepper sauce. This one is Serrano plus sweet red type. That way there is heat, but not excessive. I’m sure @Sueby husband would find it completely mild!

So sorry 😔

Sap is running so I'm trying for maple syrup. I planted the rest of the perennials and some annual herbs I hope will reseed themselves. The only one of the first set that isn't up yet is the sage.

Broccoli needs to be replanted, only one came up.

The next set will be the food plants.

The boys got out of their pen and had a fine day chasing the girls. I got them back in after dark. Three of them are such good boys. No sign of human aggression. I'm letting them grow up a bit before I let them out to see if the girls like them. 23 weeks old, so they haven't passed the aggression boundary.
