What did you do in the garden today?

Really makesyou wonder what they’re thinking.
Well Sophia is probably thinking 'Hey Hooman, where's my mealworms, get off your butt and get me my mealworms'.

He daughter Cash hopped up after her and she was thinking 'This ankle looks real tasty, I'll just take a peck and see - yes tasty Hooman flesh - the eyes look good also'....
(I made her get down off my legs at that point haha)

I saw roots coming out of a couple of my air layered mango tree pods. The roots were coming out of the breathing holes on the side of a pod. These pods were stuffed with a 50/50 peat and perlite mix. Based on the results of different substrates, I conclude that fine coco coir, stringy peat moss and 50/50 peat and perlite mix, can be used to air layer mango trees. However, it must be used with Hormex no. 8 rooting powder. Also, I didn't have to close any openings on the pods and the pods are made to be kept moist from frequent watering from the top of the pods. The large size amazon pod in the picture doesn't have the breathing holes on the side. I don't like the ones with the breathing holes on the side because I will be damaging the roots coming out of it when I take the pod off.

I'd love to grow mangos here but alas it's not to be. Though if I could grow them in a pot and over winter them inside I would do that. I wonder if one can keep them pruned to say 4 or 5' tall in a pot?

I brought out some seedlings for a bit of slow acclimatization. I'm in zone 5 and we're getting a day in the 70s F :). I will up-pot all those leggy tomato starts and have the baby chicks out with me while I do that in the pop up greenhouse. Also, I just ordered a lilac leaf Greenstalk planter (they are having a sale) for my culinary and medicinal herbs. I want to be more organized with herbs so they'll have their own growing space.

Mow #2 today.
Inspection went good. Not sure if they'll zero out the roof, but it's under full tear off haul away reinstall warranty parts and labor anyway, which I forgot until last night.
The siding on each end of each building is toast as is the 1st generation trex deck. DH and I decided to just take what they give us, add more and steel it all up and be done with it.
Stupid, giant hailstones. There were just enough to make it a problem, but not enough to make it horrific, if that makes sense.

Drove a pair of T-posts into the future bean row, wired an 8' long, 5' tall section of cattle panel between them. Still cogitating on how I'll add the additional 4' of height.

I think an 8 foot long row of rattlesnake beans will be enough. I had a 5 foot row last year and I still have some left in the freezer. But I plan to plant some bush beans too...

Growing them in containers are a little tricky. They die if they don't like the potting mix. I killed a lot of them along the way, now I use an inert 50/50 peat and perlite mix and feed them with Alaskan fish fertilizer once a week depending on how often it needs water and add Alaskan Bloom during the flowering time. Desert sand and peat 50/50 or Paver sand and peat 50/50 or small size lava rock and peat also works, beach sand is a different animal, it has an alkaline composition with a higher ph.

Mango trees thrive in slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. Keeping the soil within this range ensures optimal nutrient availability and healthy root development.

They can be grown and kept in containers. I recommend dwarf or medium size trees for containers. They don't like manure and compost based potting mixes, but it can be used on top. In addition, the size of the container needs to match the root mass, if the pot is too large, they may not like it. The pot should be upsized as the tree grows until the last size you will keep it in. I think it has something to do with waterlogging the roots in oversized pots.
