What did you do in the garden today?

Is there any possibility it could be just root rot? If they all start dying then I would think that it is fusarium with the description.
Yes, definitely possible. We've also had a very wet spring. I've just never encountered this with lettuce before... All the plants that died, except the Romaine, grew from self-seed volunteers from last year's plants. The Romaine was from starts I bought at the feed store about a month ago. It has seemed very healthy and ready for harvest. I was surprised to see that one plant just collapse overnight.
 
OK, this diagram of my hoop house is about 80% accurate on where stuff is... I marked the 2 beds where the lettuce is dying. I'm wondering if it's fusarium wilt? The whole plant just suddenly collapses/wilts. When you pull up the plant, the central stem is mush and orange/brown inside. I know fusarium is soil borne... So far none of the other beds are affected. I marked with an X the general location of the plants affected. Anyone ever dealt with that before?

Hmmm.... Lots of questions. What kind of fertilizer did you use and what is the soil comp and pH? Humidity levels in the hoop? Ambient temp average and soil moisture? Hanging pots above? Water dripping from condensation into that area?


I've experienced this when it was too wet and cool. And too warm and wet. Especially with overhead watering.

Weeded more stinging nettles, look how long the roots are 😬 they have so many, and if you leave just one root in, there comes another nettle 😩 there were tiny plant coming up in my veggie pots, I tried to see what they were and got too close ( very near sighted 🤪) I got nettle burn on my nose now 🤪 some of the roots are so thick I can’t pull them ☹️
 
Yes, they are, you can prepare the young leaves like spinach, fry a diced onion in a bit of butter and olive oil, add the cut up nettles and fry some more , add some finely diced garlic and some vegetable broth, simmer for 10 minutes and add some double cream, salt, pepper and nutmeg, done, just like spinach, you collect a big bag, and what is left are only a few servings 🤪


I make nettles like that and mix them with potato puree. that's what they did with spinach in kindergarten so that kids would eat spinach, lol. you can use any green leaves not only nettles and spinach.
 
Does anyone grow parsnips? I’ve never had them and I’m thinking about trying them in the fall. Wondering what they taste like?

I ordered lambs quarters seed because what grows wild here ends up as chicken forage or it gets trampled to death.

I’m thinking about an in ground garden in an area that would be used mostly in spring and fall. Looking through my supplies to see if I can swing a fence around it without buying materials. If I have enough I’m going to put the compost things in it and build the soil right where it sits.



I like parsnips but they need soft soil and didn't thrive in heat. plant them in autumn and where you'll have some shade. they should grow for 2 years. the first year they are tiny. I like them baked in oven with potatoes. they are somewhat sweet.
 
If you roast them with a little olive oil and salt in your oven it makes the sugars come out to crisp up and caramelize the edges. They are yummy that way.

good to know! I will try a small batch in the shade garden then. That’s about the only place I can keep things alive all summer.
