My Coop
I know people post this kind of thread all the time, but I just decided to start my own instead of looking all over to find the right thread. Soooo...... I have 4 ducklings(3 weeks old). I am hoping to get them into there enclosed run soon. I have an idea at how I want it, but would love to get ideas. I am hoping to get more ducks(just wanted to throw that out there). It is going to be 17 ft long and 10 ft wide. How many ducks do you think I can fit in there, and what cool and creative stuff can I can do with that much room?I would love to see your ideas(pics appreciated).

Also I want to know what you guys think about putting a roof on it, and what the roof needs to be made out of. Some people say bird-netting...will that work?

I have since moved and now my coop is in part of my barn and I have no run. I allow my birds to fully free range. However, I'm thinking of putting a covered area for them sometime in the future to give them an area to go during heavy rain or snow.

Anyway, back to the old coop. As you can see it has a roof on one part and is covered with hardware cloth on part. If you have aerial predators or any that climb (racoon) you want a good roof to protect them. If something gets in the run with them they have nowhere to escape. I also liked having the plastic roof section to help keep snow out.

One big thing I didn't like about the coop was cleaning it. Having it raised made it very hard for me to get in and out to clean. It wasn't small so I had to actually get in to rake out the bedding. Also, the ducks didn't like going up the ramp. They would if I herded them but they preferred to sleep on the ground. From now on any coops I build will all be on the ground. It's so much easier when you can walk in the coop to clean it.

I know what you mean about starting your own thread. I have found the search function to be pretty valuable as far as getting ideas. You can put in your terms, then select images. The nice thing about that is when you see a pic you like, if you want to know more, clicking on it (or the link below it) will take you to the original thread it was posted in. It has helped me to come up with ideas.
