What is considered basic obedience!?

All of the above and for me I like a focus or look at me command, usually I use their name.
My dog should always be focused on me on leash. This is the first thing I teach them on leash, and why I work them in distracting situations. In fact, the more distracting the circumstances, the more he should focus on me, this could save his life. This was how I taught my classes.

This was why we could quickly move to working off leash and know the dog would be safe even in distracting circumstances. You never know when a dog might come out of his collar or a leash might break..

I consider basic obedience name, sit, stay, come, heel loose leash walking and drop it. Off is another one.
Then doing their buisness on command can be done to.
Place, kennel and middle are others ones ill always teach.
The rest mine know are fun.

Hmm, for me basic obedience is different in every situation. What it comes down to, is things that help/make everyday life easier, and safer. As with many here, either down or stay, leave it, and come would be on my list. For the guard dogs (or larger dogs in general, to be honest) , I'd also include good leash manners on that list. Do all the guard dogs here have good leash manners? No. But it would be what I'd prefer.

Handler awareness is another one. I'd call that a skill more than anything else, that's why I haven't really included it. I don't focus too much on how focused the dog is on me. What I do think is absolutely necessary is for them to be aware of where the handler is

Yes, Basic obedience is what you listed, manners on leash, not pulling, paying attention to the handler, automatic Sit (sit when handler stops without a command), walk on handler's left without pulling and without constant tugging or verbal reminders, Sit-stay, Down-stay, Recall (return to heel position when called), ignore other dogs and distractions. I don't believe a dog should have to be told to Leave It, he should never pick up or take anything unless he is told to Take It.
I taught all this in a six-week course at a community colkege in NM. Oh, and corrected bad habits like jumping up on people and more.
