I am soo confused right now... I thought poopy butt was when chickens have thick feathering, and get poop all over it, and you have to bathe them. Literally every one of my chickens have that issue. So what is actually poopy butt? I think it is that but WAY worse. It is not very important, but I really want to know

I’m not sure if you mean pasty butt. Soo I’ll tell you what that is first in case that’s what you mean. Pasty butt is when poo gets stuck to a chicks down that surrounds their vent. This causes all the poo to pile up on top of itself eventually blocking the vent. The chick, or chicken, is then unable to poop. I’ve only ever heard of it as a big problem in chicks but I think chickens can get it too. Although poo just stuck to a chickens feathers is not pasty butt. Since their vent is not blocked.

Then I found this link on poopy butt. It’s the only link I was actually able to find. Besides stuff on vent gleet which is something totally different.

This website is old so I don’t know how relevant the information still is.

the link tries to identify what causes the poopy butt in the first place (ie what they are eating that causes poop to gunk up instead of coming out normally) but it is the same as pasty butt.

Poo on the feathers is not life threatening so completely different and most likely caused from chickens sleeping on top of each other (roosting bars placed so they poop on each other). I would try to avoid this for hygiene reasons if possible still.

Thank you. I have never had that problem because we picked up our chicks every day and whenever it was covered in poop, we would clean them

Pasty butt in chicks is important because it can be lethal. A chick with a bad case of it literally cannot poop through the plug of poop blocking its vent. If it can't poop it will die, possibly from shock due to the pain of severe constipation or from dehydration and starvation because it will stop eating and drinking. They can go downhill very quickly. This generally is not a problem in older chicks or grown chickens. Although adult chickens can get pretty nasty "back there."
