What is this coming out of my hen??? It’s at least 5ft long!

I don’t think anyone feels disrespected! This is fascinating. Like a train wreck. I kind if want to throw up but I can’t stop reading. Hopefully @z3lda3 can get answers and her chicken can move on with life without something dragging from it’s behind lol
@BlindLemonChicken its egg. I went back out to coop, and there’s splattered yolk on the wall. Well..now what? Was it a shell-less egg? Or is the shell still in there?? I foresee a vet visit in my future. I’m GUESSING the long clear white thing is the white of the egg. I wonder if this happened early this morning, and the white just oozed out?? Sigh. Chickens chickens chickens..don’t we have enough to deal with, keeping predators away??

I wonder if it’s membrane…I am not familiar with reproductive disorders but lots of folks on here are. I do know that a calcium citrate tablet for a few days isn’t a bad idea but you will get more thorough advice soon I am sure

I’ve had 2 chickens lay soft shell eggs without having a broken shell in either bird. One BO used to shoot the occasional soft shell out of her butt when stressed, like a Chicken Cannon 🙄

I think your girl will be fine, but you should probably give her a calcium tablet in case there is anything left in her.

Okay- then vet:
  • Sharp fragments can tear internal tissue, leading to internal bleeding or sepsis (a full-body infection).
  • Survival may only be 72 hours if left untreated.
  • The hen may seem alert at first, then suddenly collapse as infection sets in.
  • Membrane/white cant go 5ft or be solid.
  • Give Antibiotics ASAP.

My fist chicken who laid her first egg, was shell-less. It just kind of popped out. And broke on the coop steps. My husband and I were dumbfounded, being new to chickens. My husband finally stuttered out “there’s something wrong with your chicken” lol.
I’m going to give this girl an epsom salt bath (her backside isn’t what you’d call clean now), and give her some tuna. All my girls are on layer feed and additional oyster shell. Do you think she’s just not getting her fair share? Should I add a calcium supplement to her diet?

She needs vitamin D to properly process the calcium and because this is more emergent she needs a high dose that will work quickly.

When I first saw the picture, I thought it resembled chalaze, the part of the egg that attaches the yolk to the egg on each side. So, maybe that is what it was.
