What would a Barred Rock x Rhode Island Red look like?

In coloring and pattern, it should look like the BR. You could easily get some red leakage, more likely in the roosters than hens, but possible in both.

If it were reversed, RIR rooster with a BR hen, you would get black sex links.

Here's a pic of one my pullets I hatched this past spring she's from BR male x Pro. red (RIR) female. not the best of pic. but all I got for not, try to get some better ones posted when the sky brightens back up in a day or two.

I already butchered the roos from the cross but here's a pic I borrowed from a BYC member on here of what the resulting color pattern that closely resembled my results of the same cross, Maxx's roo I think.

Thank you!

I'm amazed how similar the hen looks to your BO x BR hen pic you posted on Saturday. I can tell they're different hens though, LOL.

How well does she laying? And how fast she growing & maturing? I am considering cross too. I currently have few BCM x RIR hen cross. They are about 1 week old so not sure how my turn out yet.

Yep, they can vary a lot, I have hatched some before that were as clean as Barred Rocks and then I have hatched a roo that was basically Red Barred, he was a BEAUTIFUL bird. Then you many get some that are mostly barred with just a little red leakage.

I have 5 BR crosses, 11 BRs, 1 Prod. red x GSL, 2 Prod. red all within 3 wks of age and all are laying pretty well considering its getting late in the year, but I'd have to say the 6 cross-breeds and the Pro. reds developed a little sooner/not by much maybe a week or so than the BRs but that's typicaly due to hybrid vigor.

I'm surprised by the lack of red on these chickens. I have a BR roo and a RIR hen in my mix of breeds, and I'm considering hatching my own chicks next year. I'd love to get a red barred chick. I assume they'd be excellent layers, as all of my BR's & RIR's have been fantastic.

Hmmmm.... I was wondering if I were to put a BR roo in with RIR, BO, and BR hens and hatched those eggs, if I could tell who's who when the pullets mature. I can't tell from your pic catdaddy, does the hen have yellow legs or white? Could it maybe be true that the BO crosses would have white legs and the RIR crosses would have yellow legs, or no? But then RAREROO said that some of the Xs can look like purebred BRs, so I don't know... A red barred bird sounds beautiful!

It IS so hard to get good pics of chickens. To save myself a lot of frustration, I automatically put my camera on the "blur reduction" setting, LOL. Chickens are always moving some part of their body...

ETA: Catdaddy, what kind of roo is that in your avatar? He's beautiful!
