North Queensland towns under evacuation warning as region continues to be smashed with rain ahead of flood waters peaking

Residents in North Queensland have been told to evacuate immediately with dangerous flooding causing life-threatening conditions as the region continues to cop heavy downpours on Monday.

Several North Queensland towns have been placed under evacuation warnings due to dangerous and life-threatening flooding that is set to worsen in coming hours.

Areas between Townsville and Ingham have already copped more than one metre of rain the past two days, with homes and vehicles inundated with floodwaters, roads damaged or cut off, and the tragic death of a 63-year-old woman over the weekend.

Residents in a number of suburbs - Idalia, Oonoonba, Rosslea, Hermit Park, Cluden and Railway Estate - were told to leave their family homes by Sunday midday.

The whole Hinchinbrook Shire area was also warned on Sunday to "take shelter now" and to find high ground due to dangerous flooding that could leave residents cut off.
