I have a very interesting problem that I thought I would come on here to see if anyone could give any advice.

We purchased a group of chicks a year and 3 months ago. Out of that group from that particular feed store, we had many issues, including a chick with a deformed eye and a chick with a deformed beak. We also noticed that one of the hens showed classic signs of MG when young (bubbling eye). This brings me to our rooster. At around maybe 6 months of age, we noticed that he had started wheezing and sounding funny. We did research and ended up treating the whole flock for parasites, thinking it may have been gapeworm. This didn't really seem to fix his problem. A few months later, he was still wheezing and sounding odd, so I did more research. All that I could find were diseases that said they killed within a week or so. I knew this wasn't our problem because he was still alive and kicking. Now, a year later, he still wheezes, but he is in great spirits and is molting for the first time.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing his wheezing? It's normally constant, occasionally getting worse. He seems to feel perfectly fine besides this. The only other things I can think of are that he has some white on his face near his comb and wattles. It's just slightly raised and I noticed that it seems to turn dark and then peel off. It's not fowl pox (they already went through that when they were young too).

Any advice would be appreciated. He seems to be happier but I would love to make him happier!

If one hen had symptoms of MG when it was young, it is possible that this might be the reason for his wheeze. MG is a chronic disease, and symptoms can come and go. He also could have some other underlying issue, such as getting feed into his airways or a chronic infection from aspergillis mold. It is hard to know for sure without expensive testing and vet visits. Many times we never know what was wrong until after death when the state vet can do a necropsy. Some people with chickens will use a Vaporizer with oxine kind of like when a child gets croup. There are threads about oxine (use only without the activator on chickens) and here is some reading:

I know this post was a couple years back but I'm having the same issue. It hasn't been a year yet but it's been at least 3 months. I have a rooster that wheezes after he crows or if he runs really hard but if he's just chill you don't really hear much. I cannot see anything in his mouth, I used Vetx for about week. Aside from the wheezing he seems relatively healthy. Did the wheezing ever go away for your rooster? Did you ever find out what was causing it? If you see this and respond thank you in advance.

Have the same problem with a rooster that wheezes but is healthy, energetic and eating well. Wondering what over the counter remedies I can try.

Welcome to BYC @Chickenspa I had one of my roosters who would make a bellows like noise at the end of his crow. As long as he is active and acting normal I wouldn’t worry. If you see more problems, start a new thread of your own on the emergency forum. Include all symptoms and a description, how long, and pictures may help.

Same for me, most of my roosters have an audible "inhale" after they crow.
