Hi all,

I have 6 cute baby chicks and I was wondering when I should switch them from chick food to chicken food. Right now I am buying it from TSC. Also, does it depend on the breed?

The time to switch rations depends on the feed you are using and the rate at which your birds are growing (as well as the type of bird - layers or meat birds). It's usually on the bag. For example, the feed I use, recommends upgrading from starter to grower at 4 weeks, then to layer when they start laying or around 18 weeks. That's for layers. Meat birds have different requirements, because you want them to grow big but not too fast. Some breeds can grow too fast. TSC sells some good feeds, but you may be able to find higher quality for less money if you have a mill nearby.

About 14-16 weeks. Chick feed is higher protien. It won't hurt them to stay on it a little longer, but give them some oyster shell about then for extra calcium.
Layer feed has the extra Calcium in it. Some people prefer to feed an all flock feed and provide calcium (oyster shell) on the side, especially if you have non-layers in the flock.
