Where to buy sand

I really want to put sand down in my run so that I don't get as many muddy eggs this spring when we go through mud season. I know that the best price will be if I get a truck load from a local construction or landscape business rather than buying the bagged stuff at the store. But I'm not sure what to search to find sand by the truckload. I've tried doing internet searches for construction sand, sand, and aggrigate and haven't found anything promising as far as a local business. Would I be better off looking them up in the phone book and just calling the local places for prices? Or is there something else I could type in to the internet search/online yellowpages that would give me some leads?

Also, does anyone have any handy formulas or general guidelines to help me figure out how much sand I will need? How deep should it be?

look under landscape supplies and call local for lower delivery rates, as far as amount to get, they can usually tell you how much you want-tell them the dimensions and how deep you want it

If you can, find a quarry and borrow a truck (if you don't have one) I wanted to get some delivered and they wanted 100.00 to bring it 6.7 miles. That was the delivery fee, not including the sand. So i got a couple of truck loads for 35. and about 20 in gas. The way my run is set up, they couldn't dump it where I wanted it, but I could back the smaller truck a lot closer.
I am a cheapskate.

Now that I have sand I can't belive I didn't do it sooner. LOVE it.

Having it delivered is costly . The sands cheap.

It may not be cheaper than a quarry, but you can go to Home Depot and buy 50 Lb bags for just under $3. I have a Volvo sedan, so can't dump a truckload of sand in it! I bought 7 bags on one trip and used a wheelbarrow to wheel them into the back yard and dumped them easily my self. I went a few days later and bought another 5 or so. Truck delivery is really expensive!!

Call the asphalt companies in your phone book. A pick-up load here (1/2 ton) is $6. They also have huge piles of sand mixed with gravel that he said I could have free as much as I could haul off, they even loaded it for me.

I don't know the dimension of where you want to put the sand but from my own experiences, I bought 6 buckets from my local donut shop that were used, put them in my pick up and went to the nearest supply yard. My sand area is 20 square feet 4 ft wide by 5 feet long and half of a two by four deep. I told the guy to dump about 500 lb which is a small drop in the bed of a pick up. Most lands in the buckets that I reserve for a later date what is left in the bed goes in the coop. The builder supply would also let me shovel for a dollar a bucket if I wanted to. 500 lbs was under $5 and changes my coop 2 times maybe three if I skimp.
