Which Predator have you lost duck(s) to? and what State/Province are you located?

I think we should use backyardchickens to start keeping a user-based database of regional predator attacks to help our entire community become more educated with the real local threats they face and reduce loss from predators through design and planning.

Here in NJ, very real threats are fox, raccoons, coyotes, mink, bobcats, opossums, great horned owls, and dogs.

Unfortunately, it's unknown here. I had a duck that I think was separated from the flock in a snow storm (I let them free range that day because the forecast was for only a few inches. We ended up with 8+ while I was at work and came home down one duck.) her remains were found down stream the next day, so there weren't even footprints in the snow to reference.

Another night we had 2 females that I'd gotten as adults... they were notoriously bad about coming home at dusk. They would hang out in the stream not coming in. I went in a few times to get them previously but this was January in New England and there was no way it was happening that night. 4am the next morning there was one duck sitting outside the coop quacking to get in.. no sign of the other one.

Predators I know we have in northern RI: raccoon, fisher cats, bard owls, hawks, coyote.

ETA: forgot fox. Bobcats aren't common in RI, but there have been a few sightings in western Cranston in the last year.

I didnt know bobcats lived here...

Bobcats are relatively common in northern NJ and were occasionally seen in the Sourland Mts of Somerset Co. Here in Hunterdon Co. I have seen tracks in the snow but have never seen a bobcat.

Three of mine were killed by dogs.......... out here in Ga, allot of people let their dogs out to roam free........And depending on how much woods are around your property we have foxes and raccoon's and if you put them out as ducklings i would worry about falcons and hawks

We have neighbors with a really aggressive pit that keeps on coming over...and the people behind us have two lil shiz twuos (spelling?) that are crazy around the birds...last time they came over they got shocked by the electric fence so hopefully thats the last of them for a while

Lost a total of 8 ducks last spring from a coon and 4 young; treed the 4 kits and dispatched those, but mom got away.

Dispatched another coon this spring but it was a juvenile.

Lost a few in the creek but unsure what got those.

Lost 15 this spring in a 2 night weasel spree. Never did get the weasel but lost 5 more in the creek. Possible they flew away though; they're mallards.

Coyote got 8 of my aunts hens last year. Never got the coyote. This year, she lost 10 before catching a total of 6 coons, all dispatched on site.

My mom has lost 4 guineas to coyotes this year. No catch on it, either.
