Who has light/nightlight in coop?

We have a light on a timer. Depending on he time of year, we have it set differently. Right now we have it set for 6 - 8 am. Our's tend to go in to roost about 5 pm on their own, so there's plenty of light in the evening now in the coop. In the darker months we had the light on until 7 pm to make sure everyone was settled before it was dark in the coop. Of course, it makes a difference if you don't have windows for natural light in your coop. Our first tractor style was really dark inside, so we tended to have the light on more than we do now.

We did have a light in the tractor/coop when we first put them out there at about 6 weeks... and did notice that they wouldn't go back up into the coop unless the light was on... so let them have their way for a few days, turning the light off once they were in and locked up. After a couple of three days I noticed that they'd go up without the light, as we'd turn it off during the day and all... so, no light any longer. They're about 10 or so weeks now and they go up into the coop to roost and we lock 'em in every night... during the winter I'll probably run a light during the day to give them that daylight feel but that's about it.
In a perfect world that light would be a solar LED deal that could be set on a timer ... I'd better start looking! ;-)

haha yes you better start ASAP!!! Thanks!

I have 3 of those stick on battery operated push lights INSIDE the girls coop IF I need them. Outside the coop in their enclosed run I have a light attached to a timer. It came in very handy during the dark winter mornings and dark early winter evenings. The problem was that they would stay out until the light shut off at night... which would instantly leave them in total darkness. I will rig a light INSIDE the coop with a timer for next winter, so they head in there when the sun goes down (at 4:30!!). It's so nice for them right now... to just mosey on into the coop when the sun starts to go down!

I use solar led sidewalk lights. You just remove the stake that you would stick them in the ground with (they are made to twist right off) and then stick the light in a window of your coup. I have 2 of them now that I have had for 3 years and they only cost 3 bucks each! These are the ones I bought:

The nice thing is they come on when it gets dark and it's just enough light to coax them in. I think as it gets dark the coup is just a little bit lighter and less scary so they go right in. No power needed. Also the light is soft enough (only one little led in them) that it does not affect their laying patterns.

more and more people keep talking about having those. I had a nightlight like you would put in your hallway in there tonight and they still didn't go in, I plugged the 15watt light up and they went all the way in! I hope they get all this figured out before they start laying lol!

I'm still building my coop. But when it is done it will have a timer system to turn on the lights and there will be w thermostat to control the temperature inside the coop. The powerbox on the side of the coop is where all the electrical will be located and where I'll run power to the coop.

Looks and sounds awesome! My electrical and carpentry skills arent that advanced!

Looooooove your coop! The blue stuff is insulation, correct? I'm going to have to retrofit insulation on the new chicken tractor construction before autumn over here in Wisconny. So we don't have chicken popsicles.
