Why is my goose yelling at me?

Hi all,

We have a pair of roughly 10 month old Tolouse, who free range our backyard with our flock of ducks and provide us with much amusement.

The door to our backyard is one of those glass french doors. Recently, the gander has taken to banging on the back door with his beak, and when I go to the door to see what's going on, standing there and yelling at me through the glass. When I open the door, he either waddles off, or continues to stand there and yell at me.

Since no demand letter has been forthcoming, and I don't speak goose, I have no idea what he's trying to tell me.

Anyone have any ideas as to what's prompting this harmless, but mildly annoying behavior?

Sorry I can't help but

He's calling you out..........he's boss. Actually no idea as geese are a very funny species. If it wasn't for the fact that they love to grease up where we walk out of house, wouldn't mind geese again. No easier or cheaper animal to raise.

I agree with a couple of posters. He may be calling you out to tell or show you something. Try following him when he leaves and see if he knows something he thinks you should know.

Of the last springs goslings here, one was small and tended to get into situations that she couldn't handle. One day we were outside and the goslings had the run of the yard. I became aware that she was not with the rest, saw her in some tall weeds struggling. At that point two of the other goslings came up yakking at us. One of the older children followed them and they led her right to the stranded gosling. The girl brought the gosling to me and the two others followed to keep check of what was going on. To me, it was obvious they had come to get me to help the little one.

Geese are known for letting their human care givers know when something is wrong... They will yell at you to follow them to help one of them out of problem situations or if there is something in the area they don't want there & some times just because you don't see something that out of place don't mean it isn't there...
They will yell and keep it up as loud as they can & waddle around when there is something they are scared of.

My two geese honk at me from the inside of their coop just for protection but I do not know if that is what your gander is doing???

My toulouse gander does the same thing. He sees me out the window and just starts hollering until I leave. I think it's just what they do to "protect" their flock.

Thanks for all the ideas, guys! Wish I had some answers for you, but he hasn't done it after that day. Nothing wrong or unusual was going on in the yard, and he certainly wasn't hollering for lack of food, the little piggy!

So I guess it will just remain one of those web-footed mysteries. . . I'll post if he does it again!
