why is my rooster crowing (and crowing and crowing) at 3:55 am? It’s full black dark, and will be until 7:00 am or later. The rooster is closed up in the coop with the egg-layers, as always at night (for safety from predators).

Can’t think of anything that would make him crow!!

Maybe he is celebrating after making some new chicks? Or just an early bird? :p From what I understand roosters are nuts and do weird things like that..Maybe he heard something outside that scared him?

Not sure what to do about that one mine begins around 3:30 or 4:00 am until light. There are 3 around the area and they all call back and forth all morning. Like they are trying to top each other and Heidi is right roosters are nuts!

It's in the rooster handbook that when neighboring roosters start crowing, yours MUST chime in too. It's in the rooster handbook that only tv roosters begin crowing when the sun starts coming up. All non tv roosters are to drive their owners crazy by starting their crowing early.

chickens, generally, see better than we do. They have some sort of ultraviolet vision which makes them see sunlight WAY before we can even see a glimmer of light. Thats why roo's crow so early. You can try closing your roo in a box at night, so he doesn't see the sun, its supposed to prevent crowing early.

Well jokes on my rooster. I wake up at three here and start crowing till 3:30. It's sad to know that you wake up before the rooster crows

Mine do the same thing. I think they just like announcing to the world how big and strong and "virile" they are. Even the teeny little bantam roosters who sound like they are on helium. ;) Maybe my bigger roosters are trying to show the little bantams how to crow properly? Or maybe to drown out the squeaky little crowers? :lau
