My Coop
My Coop
Man oh man have I daydreamed about my coop for months! The main portion of the coop is complete except some painting and trim! It’s a large 8x8 so we can get plenty more if we want ☺️ I still have more pictures to take now that the door is also on. Next is the flyway. The inside is at least done and our chickens love it!

Is it too late to extend the roof overhangs and add soffit vents?

I'm afraid that you need a circle 14 inches across to give a single square foot of ventilation for one adult, standard-sized hen.
I had to add the ventilation holes and all along the top afterwards. We didn’t realize till later the plans didn’t give much of an overhang so I couldn’t put the vents along the sides.

we added a fly rafter to ours on one side that didn't have an overhang so that were able to add more ventilation with out worrying about rain or snow getting in. maybe that is something that you can do?

Also you may want hardware cloth on the window as that keeps things out. chicken wire keeps chickens in but doesn't keep predators out and with that being basically the only ventilation you are going to want that to be able to be left open all the time. Hopefully it doesn't blow directly on the chickens when open?

Looks good though. We are also working on an 8x8 coop and a 18x8 run and it sure is a LOT of work! for the coop we are down to finishing the hardware cloth on the openings, trim and painting. Hoping to get it painted and finish the last bit of hardware cloth this week and get the trim done this weekend. Then time to start on the run......

There are shutters on the outside that I can open and close and they’re only open during the day that’s the only reason I put chicken wire on the window. The whole chicken run will be hardwire mesh to make sure nothing can get in. We’re able to watch the coop all day so the window I was lenient on the cloth and just put the wire. The window doesn’t face the sun so they wouldn’t have the sun beating in and the wind doesn’t blow directly in to much. I made sure I placed the window on a specific side.

We’ve dug a rat wall and we’re also digging a rat wall around the run we’re now building.

I’m going to add fly rafters. We had to get the gutters on first so I can make sure I cut below them

So you plan on closing the window, even during the summer at night? You might want to rethink putting HWC on the window, so it can stay open. You might even need it cracked open during the winter, for ventilation. Without knowing your general location, it's hard to give good advice. Your state would be better than USA, for location!
