Wounded chicken. Please help.

Is there a reason not to use the peroxide? I saw not to use iodine. I have the triple antibiotic ointment I used it doesn't contain pain reliever! So good thing 😳
Hydrogen peroxide is fine to use once upon initial injury, but studies have recently come out that have shown that it actually destroys healthy tissue when it’s used during the healing process. I have not read the studies myself - just what I’ve been told.
Update: I don't think she will make it. There is now blood in her stool.
I’m so sorry. Is there a chance she has coccidiosis? Has your flock been treated for that since they’re relatively young? It can come out during stressful situations sometimes. Can you post a picture of the poop? How is the poop from the rest of your flock? Treatment for coccidiosis is simple if that happened to be what she has. Do you think she has internal injuries that could cause the bleeding instead?

To answer your question about not wanting to eat after an attack; it can be perfectly normal. They’re in pain, possibly in shock, they’re scared and you’ve likely taken them out of the flock and placed them in what would be a strange new place to them. To try to interest her in food again, you can offer chicken feed wetted down and made into a mash, canned chicken, scrambled egg, or even plain Greek yogurt. Although if she is pooping blood, I would be even less surprised if she would eat. I’m so sorry.

Also welcome to the site. Sorry it is under these circumstances.

Hi! I am new to joining the group. I have a Leghorn that got out of the coop and was attacked by my grandfathers dog yesterday (Saturday) morning. I cleaned his wounds using a sealing and water mixture, got the feathers out with tweezers (very gently), then sprayed with hydrogen peroxide. From there I put a triple antibiotic ointment and she is residing in my bathroom.

Has been drinking water and recently pooped after I cleaned her wounds again but still refuses to eat? It's over 24 hrs no food but does drink. She can't stand but has a wound right above her leg which is probably a why. Is it normal to show no food interest?

Her back has an open wound but it's not as bad as a chicken I have rehabilitated previously. I've checked her entire body for any other ones but I'm concerned because she is only 3 months old.

I've attached her back wound picture below. 👇
I personally would have eaten her. But that's what I do with half of my flock anyway. The rest are for Eggs.
Anytime that I've had any bird get hurt, which isn't often at all, I made soup. It beats worrying or having it suffer with pain I can not help. Also the vet is too expensive and I don't agree with using medication, hormones or vaccine on an animal I'm going to consume anything from.
Either way I wish you the best of luck and I hope you find a solution that's best. Healing prayers for you both.

Iodine eats new healthy tissues. That's why its not recommended for any wound care. You can use it to clean the wound. But after one application it will wreak havoc on the healing process if it's continued.
Even on people. I know this from nursing.

Updates? Agree…no harsh chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide or iodine except for initial cleaning only - destroys healthy cells as well while healing. I use the Vetericyn wound cleanser spray and apply the Manuka honey then apply a clean gauze. Change dressing daily. I had a turkey get mauled by a dog and he survived. Definitely keep in a cool, dark place, give lots of treats with protein- eggs, mealworms, yogurt, etc. fluids with electrolytes and vitamins.

Hopefully your poor chicken is still around and is on the mend....

I use Nu-Stock if I have an injured chicken. I first purchased it when we had Meat Goats and it worked wonderful. Lately, I have used it on a Donkey foal who had a slash from a piece of barb wire. Her injury on lower rear leg was long and deep. Now you can hardly see where the deep slash was....

I’m so sorry your hen was attacked by a dog. I had a neighbors dog do the same thing to one of my favorite hens and the wound looks similar. You’ve done everything right just keeping her calm warm and safe for now is just what she needs. My hen recovered from the shock after a few days and she did start eating I kept visiting her and loving on her keeping her clean as well as her bedding. Hang in there’

You never know when a hen will pull through and when they won’t, I’ve had two hens attacked one by a raccoon one by a (small) mystery animal both had the back half of their heads mauled off, one made it and lived to be a miracle chicken for at least for years until a week ago, and the other died the next day. Everyone has given you amazing advice so far, good luck to you and your chicken. I do recommend trying to entice her with treats she likes if she refuses to eat for maybe a week, and I like to use plain yogurt with live microbiomes. They usually eat it if you use a syringe and squeeze a bit out by their beak.
