Wrath's Marans

do you have any layers that are f1s from the BCM x EE? I’m curious if they all lay green eggs?
Only 1, the reasoning for hatching more.

BCM x EE would be an F1.
If you breed the f1 back to the BCM, that would be a BC1(backcross 1).
If you breed BC1 x BC1 you get an f2.
If you breed BC1 back to the marans again, you get a BC2.
Here’s a better description of the generations:

Great info, thanks.
Duh moment, I have that site bookmarked and have seen that graph but never sunk in to the brain box.

Let's talk about selling day olds.

Who's done a specific hatch or hatches to sell?
How did it go?
Do you require a down payment and what do you charge for a incubation fee and the day olds?

I got a text from someone I do not know that wants day olds. I don't have day olds, I have eggs. So curious I started asking questions.... What? Marans and Eggers.. How many? 22 .. When? asap..

This is new to me but I'm thinking...why not? There's no lose situation here. If I don't get paid, they're my birds. (Keep or sell eventually)
I just don't know what to charge... I'll need to do a little research on what day olds are selling for and come up with a price I guess and go from there.
Which this of course would all be worked out before I set eggs.

Other than that what's the thoughts on this?

I haven’t sold any day olds but I’m seriously considering it. At the moment I have a waiting list on eating eggs. So hatching would take away from that but I don’t really make any money on eggs it’s mostly friends and family.

I think if I were to hatch for day olds I wouldn’t take pre orders just because if they don’t hatch I don’t want to owe someone a chick. It would be first come first serve and very likely sold as a group. Probably meet somewhere other than my house for pickup. That’s just me possibly being overly worried about bio security but to me the less chicken owners on this property the better. It would only take one person who lost their flock to come to me for replacements and bring something on the property I don’t want.

I might also just hatch out a bunch to grow out and butcher. I’m a firm believer in trying to learn my flock inside and out. Looking at the inside of the bird is the best way to know what’s going on inside your birds. My biggest hang up on hatching out a lot of birds is that I plan to be out of the state for a week in July so I need to time chicken ages and butcher dates to make it as easy as possible for the people I have coming to take care of things in my absence.

I'm wording it to potential buyer that I'll set 22 but they only pay for what hatches, what ever that count is.. no guarantees.

I've done this a couple times. They paid for the price of the eggs, then a $20 fee for the service. They had to pick the chicks up within 3 days of hatch or would be charged an additional $1 per chick. If they did not pick them up within a week, I'd sell them to someone else. Those were the terms that I set. All the chicks were picked up by 3 days old both times. I'm currently doing a hatch for someone that I did this for last year, I am not charging him an upfront fee this time because I have dealt with him before.

Hmmmm...that's interesting you charge for the egg price and not day old price.
