    When to introduce outside

I have some almost six week old chicks. Most are almost completely feathered out. I live in Montana so it’s still in the upper 30’s to low 40’s at night. But the next few days will be in the low 70’s. Would it be ok to put them out in a pen for a few hours in the afternoon?

    Growth rate?

I bought 11 chicks from a breeder two weeks ago. 3 Buff Orpington, 3 Silver Wyandotte, 3 Specked Sussex and 2 Light Brahmas. The Buff’s are huge compared to the rest and especially 1 Wyandotte and 1 Sussex are tiny. They all seem healthy and active. I’ll attach a photo of them today at just...

    Hen attacked by guinea

My sweet, docile Dark Brahma was attacked by my bully guinea yesterday. Her head is bloody and her eyes swollen shut. I have washed her head and applied Vetrycin and syringed warm water into her mouth which she drank readily. I have her in a hay filled box in my heated tack room now. What else...

    Pullet with splayed legs

I have a 7 month old Wyandotte pullet whose legs suddenly don't seem to work. Some days she can barely stand, yet others she walks (with difficulty) around their big yard. What could cause this in an adult chicken and is there anything I can do for her?

    Guinea keets

I am new to guineas. I have 6 ten day old keets. Will I be able to add them to my chicken flock without the chickens picking on them? And at what age will it be safe to move them to the coop? I was hoping by the time they are 6 - 7 weeks old? Is it best to put them in the coop at night?

    Hen with head missing!

When my husband went to the coop to feed this afternoon, one of our hens was laying there missing it's head. No other signs of damage to her body. What could have done this? We had skunk issues awhile back and we trapped and took care of that. Could a skunk have done this? And it happened...

    Give broody hen some chicks?

I have a broody hen who has been sitting on eggs for 23 days. She left her next for one night about 10 days in. Nothing has hatched so I don't think they will at this point. Would she accept and raise some day olds if I put them under her?

    Moving a broody hen

My buckeye hen has collected a clutch of eggs outside her coop in some long grass. We were unaware of her project until we couldn't find her last night and discovered her and her 8 eggs. I would like her to hatch them out, but how do i go about moving her inside?

    Chickens who don't roost

I have a fairly new flock of Buckeyes. When I first got them, I put them in the same coop as my old hens. The old girls didn't let them up on the roost at night so they started sleeping on the floor under the nest boxes. Now I have moved them to their own coop, and they all (4 hens, 1...

    Growth under beak

I posted before with no responses. So I am hoping someone has an idea what this might be. It is a firm, fast growing growth. No other symptoms and she seems to feel fine.

    Growth under beak

One of my hens has developed a growth under her beak. It has a fairly hard consistency. It is growing quickly. Any ideas of what it is or what i should do?

    Looking for Heritage pullet (s)

Looking for a couple of heritage breed pullets to join our small flock. Will have an excellent home where they have a safe place to free range. Prefer to find them in the central CA/Sierra foothills area so I don't need to ship.

Buff Orpington Rooster/ 1 year old

Very nice year old Buff Orpington Rooster. Not aggressive; needs his own flock. My older rooster is picking on him. I would like to find him a good home. Local only - can deliver to the Boise/Nampa/Caldwell/Fruitland area.

    Finding extra rooster a home

Last summer I raised Buff Orpington roos for my butcher chickens. There was one that the other roosters picked on so I brought him down to my hen house to save his life. He has grown into a very nice fellow but I don't need an extra rooster. What is the best way to find him a good home...

    Skunk!

A skunk has moved in under our porch. Our Westie crawled under there 2 days ago and was going bezerk barking and came out with the lovely skunk scent. I believe the skunk is still under there. Any suggestions on how to politely ask him/her to move along and that he is not welcome here? My...

What to do with old hens?

We are (hopefully) moving within the next 6 months and I'm not sure what to do with my old hens. I plan to move the 3 young hens and Leroy the rooster. The old hens are 3 -4 years old and still lay the occasional egg. I had thought about putting an ad on craigslist to see if I could find them...

    Aging the meat after butchering

In the past I've always let the birds rest in the fridge for a few days before freezing. I took them to be processed at a different processor this time and they put them in the airtight bags (I'm having a brain fart and can't remember the word - not shrink wrap - but similiar ) Anyway, they...

    Buff Orpington meat birds

This is my 3rd year rasing BO's as meat birds. Last year they were ready to butcher at 23 weeks and dressed out between 4 - 5 pounds and were delicious. This year we are at 23 weeks now and they look big, but when I pick them up, appear to have very little meat on them. How long do most of you...
