I think ours is a dyson Pet too (3 dogs, 2 double coaters), but we use it a lot less now that we're in a hardwood floored house. We just sweep with a broom instead. Only one rug in the house.

Yep. I hop on craigslist. I order 10-20 bales of grass mix hay from a local farm (a little clover and alfalfa mixed in) and 3-7 bales of straw depending on what I'm expecting to need. I pay $75 to have it delivered to me in the 'burbs and it's still cheaper than buying from TSC/farm stores when...

I do but only because I order it with my years hay supply for the rabbits. It's $3-5 a bale for me depending on the year.

@BReeder! That's exactly how I lay out my garden plans, but I do mine in a paint program! :) I like making charts of everything at the right sizes. I like your winter squash idea. I might try that out. :) I've been thinking of trellising mine this year. What a great post. :)

We also compost all winter, but also my pile is chest high sometimes from rabbit bedding... I just don't turn it. It cooks all winter and the snow melts on it very quickly from the heat.

I think if I tried to only grow what was cheaper than buying I wouldn't be growing anything. Except maybe heirloom green beans and radishes. XD My goal is to try to grow as much of my diet myself as possible and learn enough about growing in our climate to someday build a sustainable community...
