We have lift off! Mama has taken her new babies outside to teach them how to forage. It's the cutest thing I've ever seen. This is what I've wanted all along. Breed my own flock.
Barred Rock crossed with a Buff Orpington Rooster. I'm thrilled!
My nesting boxes are old milk crates. I have a Broody Hen sitting on 8 eggs and I'm afraid that it's going to be too small for the hatching process. I do have another coop smaller but would be better but I'm afraid to move her and the eggs. It all snuck up on me as life happens. It's day 21 now...
It's a first egg for this bullet the egg is out but it's covered in a bloody sack that is protruding from her butt and I don't know what to do. She's letting me hold her while I mess with it trying to pull the feathers off of it but I don't know what to do somebody please help us here's a picture
I'm cleaning up the gardens a bit and my Indigo plant is voracious. I am wondering if some of it can go to the chickens.
Anyone know? I've done a search here and online but haven't seen anything.
I have a 11 day old chick I got from Farm n Fleet that is smaller than her siblings and not flying around. She just sits in my hand where the others try to get away.
I put some electrolytes in their water and saw her drink some but she's mainly hanging out under the heater.
Felt her crop, not...
I've been looking at a couple of videos that they're using what they called a Thermal Brick. I can't seem to find it tho..
It is like an electrical plug that regulates heat for like a waterer. If it gets down below freezing it turns on.
Does anyone know what I'm referring to? Thanks.
Edit to...
Is anyone growing Valerian? I have a question. I deadheaded mine and see that the stems are hollow and now it's dying.
The leaves are yellow and the top of the stem is nasty and brown.
Am I going to lose it? What can I do for it?
Does anyone freeze fruit and veggies from their garden for the winter?
With prices of everything going up I'm starting to think ahead to winter. I imagine crumble would get pretty boring all winter so I just threw some chopped up watermelon in the freezer and thinking of other things as well.
Don't see this anywhere so I'll ask my question.
I have 5 10 week old pullets in the coop and when I got them I ordered a rooster which came in today. He's quite lonely so I've been holding him a lot. Should I put him in the coop with the ladies but make a cage for him so the girls don't kill...
I'm very worried. I just put my 8 week old Barred Rock chicks out in the coop. And now we've got a huge storm coming in. I'm in Central Illinois. What are the rest of you doing? I'm thinking about moving them in to the Morton Building that they're behind. They're backed up to the outer South...
I think I made too much fermented starter feed for my chicks. I didn't think it would go bad but after reading here I'm afraid I've wasted quite a bit. I have 5 chicks and made about 2 1/2 gallons of fermented feed. 😳 I see that I can refrigerate it, for how long? Should I cover it slightly...
Has anyone made a dog Kennel the actual coop? I sold my tiny TSC coop because it was so small and I was on my hands and knees so much and at my age that's not going to work. So, a friend brought me a chain link dog kennel. I covered it in wire so it's pretty much bomb proof now. But it's big...
Well the rain finally stopped and I am able to dig. I dug a trench around 3/4 of the coop and reenforced all the hardware cloth with 1/4 in. Now I'm not sure if I need to do the back because the coop is dug into a slope. What do you think?
Hi ya'all, Question.
Budget is super tight as with so many but I have a roll of aluminum screen and was wondering if I could use that instead of chicken wire or hardware cloth around the base of my coop. It would help tremendously if I could.
What say you?
Thanks!
I'm searching but can't find what I'm looking for. I'm going to have to get some kind of shade cloth that will also let air circulate through. I don't have a lot of shade and will need to provide some when I get my chicks. Can someone please direct me to the right article or thread?!
Thanks,
Marsha
Petrified!!!
Hi everyone! Yes, I'm so new to this I'm afraid I'll mess it up! I'm very excited to get familiar here and get to learning! I don't have any chicks yet. I am in town and allowed to have up to 4. I think I will only get 2 or 3. I'm getting ready to build a coop and a fenced area for...
