    Help needed??

Why not both? The (white) Leghorns will lay white eggs and the RIR's will lay brown.

    Compost question

I think you compost will be fine. Pine shavings are carbon and need a lot of nitrogen to break them down, and chicken poop is high nitrogen, so I think you will be fine. If your compost is heating after a day or so, it's breaking down. If it's not heating, I'd guess its too dry.

    African Violets!

Watch out! African Violets, especially collecting the "named" varieties, is as addictive as raising chickens! You can find starter plants and leaves on ebay. There are shows where you can buy plants and greenhouses with mail order too. Once you get the hang of starting plants, you can't stop...

Found LED light at tsc great for candling, I can c through brown eggs!

The Tractor Supply around here has these LED flashlights down to $2.99. I have a Surefire, but it was expensive and takes $20 worth of camera batteries. These LED's work off of three AAA batteries and work great.

Anyone else out there have this problem with their R-Com 20? Mine works great as far as holding temperature and humidity. Recently the turner makes a horrible, loud groaning noise. Any ideas would be appreciated. I think I've heard about others having problems with this model, but I don't...

Bantam Eggs vs Large Eggs in Baking

Does anyone know how many bantam eggs equal one large or extra large egg in a recipe? My bantams are laying like crazy and I've got some baking to do.

If a rabbit is bred to early

When you put any two rabbits together, regardless of gender, they will immediately become very excited at seeing and smelling another rabbit and either start humping each other or fighting. It's just something rabbits do. The buck is breeding age, but the doe, is really young at nine weeks...

    2010 Texas Chickenstock - May 29,2010

Any rules on bringing chickens to swap? I am in the Hill Country, so San Marcos is about 2 hours from me. Not far at all! I would love to find homes for a bunch of my chickens. I can't build pens fast enough.

How to get eggs to hatch...

I've never left mine for a full week, but they have gone a couple of days without turning and been fine. My duck eggs seem to do better if they are turned less, like only twice a day, than if they are in an automatic turner. What a nice surprise to come home to!
