    Process Freedom Rangers, age

I have 20 Feeedom Rangers hatched first week of September. I'd get them processed now but the two processors in my area are booked up with turkey orders so it might be a few more weeks. Apart from just being bigger, how does that affect the meat? What's the optimal age range? Thx

    Dead laying hen

Thanks for reply. Our chickens free range in a wooded homestead. I put out soy free og feed 24x7 from a local grainery (which they dont consume much of this time of year) and scratch+sunflower seeds+oyster shell on the ground in the am. They are mostly RI Red mix from nearby Moyers. I have no...

    Dead laying hen

Discovered this morning one of my six hens stone cold dead, up by the nesting boxes. I'd be surprised if it's avian flu but can't rule out anything. I have not introduced anything new to the homestead EXCEPT two chicks incubated locally by a friend with a very small backyard flock. She doesn't...

Rats, using cement or plaster of paris

@Millworker26 ... that is a solid way to look at it, thank you very much. But the LD50 for rats I see here http://www.askdsw.com/Data/ProductsMSDS/HAR-READYMIX.pdf is 180 mg/kg. So, using the .5 kg per rat average, doesn't that yield LD50 for 6667 rats (rounded up)? Either way, 600 or 10x...

Rats, using cement or plaster of paris

Got cats, done that. They just climb up and out of the pen -- either bored or scared.

Rats, using cement or plaster of paris

We have chickens and ducks -- and rats. Until it got cold in December, I was setting snap traps and eliminated 60 of them over a couple months. They also wised up and we were unsuccessful with the traps since then. That 60 was like the tip of the iceberg and the population has really exploded...

    Lame duck

I supplement their feed with niacin after one of mine went "lame" -she couldnt stand. It cleared up within a week and no recurrence since with the niacin.

    Show off your house ducks!

Please let me know if i should post to a new thread or run this here... "Solo" is our single hatchling courtesy of a brooder chicken we have. We are on the fence about whether to try eventually to integrate it into the flock or to make it a house pet. I have read that it is unwise to house a...

How/can a chicken "raise" ducklings she hatches?

Hatch started yesterday morning and I found it was done in the evening. Blanche, the brooding hen, was not sitting close to her duck hatchling, who was splayed out in the hay bedding. Blanche pecked at me and the baby and, with a cool night ahead, i decided not to risk it.

    Bully drakes

I am very keen to hear of the outcome or a solution, have a similar situation. Should I post my particulars in a new thread so as not to hijack this or add-on? thanks, Jim
