Hey. I'm around lurking on occasion but I've just been so busy! We have 4 coops right now and I won't even guess how many chickens. We just got the fence up around the garden this year to combat the deer. My back is not happy with all the yard work!
I have a sweet leghorn/ Bantam Cochin mix hen who hatched eggs twice in the last year and is broody again. I tried to break her of it, but she was so determined! Unfortunately we lost our Roo to a fox, so none of our eggs are fertilized.
Ended up going to TSC yesterday for chicks but all they...
To be honest I'm not 100% sure. I'm leaning girl at this point because usually my bantam baby boys start making themselves obviously early, but I really worry this one is a bit of a runt and may just be getting there slowly.
My bantam cochin went broody so I let her sit on a few eggs. Unfortunately, only one chick made it. I tried to give her more chicks, but she would not take them. 🤷♀️
Fast forward 5 weeks. Mom has begun laying again, but the chick is still following her around. The little one will sit right in...
Starred with 10 eggs, 4 hatched with no problem. 1 died after pipping, 1 never pipped. The last 4 went weird and I don't know why. Woke up to 3 out of their shell but with a lot of gunk on them. They were fine but tired and seem to be doing alright now. The last egg though... The chick hatched...
I have 2 right now, Mr Fancy and Snickers. I have a hatch going right now, will hopefully be busy with new little fluff butts in a few days ❤
We have another coop full of different breeds, but these are my babies 🥰
I don't even trust my cat alone with our bantams, and he's generally pretty good at recognizing that these are "family" and he shouldn't mess with them. At the end of the day he is a predator, and they are walking happy meals. I certainly wouldn't trust cats I don't know.
We have a screen over the back door that opens down the middle and closes with magnets. My dog just pushed through to let herself in and out, but the chickens never quite figured it out. Worked well all summer for us, though they would camp out right on the back porch and stare in at us 😅
Got a bit of a fright the other day when I went to check on my chickens to find that a hawk had gotten INSIDE the run. Miraculously, we only had one casualty (RIP, Jelly). It seems like one or both roosters gave the hawk quite the beating.
Unfortunately, one of our hens got very messed up. I...
I have an 8 month old barred rock rooster that is wonderful in every way except one - as soon as I let him and the girls out of the coop in the morning he is very er, forceful in his attentions. The poor hens can't even get to breakfast before he starts, and some of them seem to stay in the coop...
