Welsh harlequin duck has been sitting on and defending her nest for the past week. I checked on the eggs and the mama today, and she was sitting on them, but they did not feel warm. Every once in a while I’ll peek into the duck house during the day, when it’s just her in there, and sometimes it...
One of my polish chicks, about 6 weeks old, was having trouble growing her crest feathers. It took her longer than the other polish chick. But as soon as feathers started poking through, they all fell out and now the top of her head looks green-ish. Both polish chicks plus a crested cream legbar...
This is my first time hatching duck eggs from my super star khaki campbell crossed with welsh harlequin. Tentative hatch day is supposed to be tomorrow. 3 of 4 look dark and full of duckling and a large air cell and shadowy movements. It doesn’t look like they’ve pipped internally, but they’re...
She pushed out a bit of clear watery fluid from her cloaca. There’s still more in there. Should I drain it? What is it? It is not egg white consistency, it’s watery.
Another update- with gloves and KY jelly, checked for egg or shell fragments. No egg and no shell fragments, but a lot of fluid. Could she be stuck with a shell-less egg?
She ate her mash this morning as usual. I mix the layer mash with warm water in the mornings now that it’s snowing. I doubt she’s eaten anything besides the mash bc everything is under a blanket of snow right now. I’m in upstate NY. Her gurgling and panting is getting worse by the minute.
Yes I was about to edit my post. I gave her sugar water and felt her crop when I brought her inside. She drink a fair amount when I dipped her beak. Her crop has some food but is soft and malleable. The girls get layer mash. When I lift her she does not try to hold herself up. She won’t bear any...
One of my ISA brown hens about 7 months old had been laying in the snow and all puffed up, eyes were open when I picked her up and brought her inside. The rest of her sisters were fine, hanging out in or under the coop where there is no snow. She didn’t perk up when I refilled the feeders and...
Might be regional. My khakis are slightly smaller than the welsh, or about the same size.
Either way, I’m mainly making dog food, and occasionally roasting two whole birds at a time to feed a family of 4, or 4 breasts to a pot pie and bones/organs to the grinder, for example. More for every...
