Broody duck but eggs feel cold?

I have one. What temperature should they be at this point, ‘un-brooded’?

Broody duck but eggs feel cold?

Welsh harlequin duck has been sitting on and defending her nest for the past week. I checked on the eggs and the mama today, and she was sitting on them, but they did not feel warm. Every once in a while I’ll peek into the duck house during the day, when it’s just her in there, and sometimes it...

Polish chick green bald spot on head

Thank goodness, I was so worried it was fungal. I’ll separate her via hardware cloth.

Polish chick green bald spot on head

One of my polish chicks, about 6 weeks old, was having trouble growing her crest feathers. It took her longer than the other polish chick. But as soon as feathers started poking through, they all fell out and now the top of her head looks green-ish. Both polish chicks plus a crested cream legbar...

Is this air cell too big?

This is my first time hatching duck eggs from my super star khaki campbell crossed with welsh harlequin. Tentative hatch day is supposed to be tomorrow. 3 of 4 look dark and full of duckling and a large air cell and shadowy movements. It doesn’t look like they’ve pipped internally, but they’re...

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

She has passed away. RIP Melon, my friendliest chicken.

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

She pushed out a bit of clear watery fluid from her cloaca. There’s still more in there. Should I drain it? What is it? It is not egg white consistency, it’s watery.

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

Another update- with gloves and KY jelly, checked for egg or shell fragments. No egg and no shell fragments, but a lot of fluid. Could she be stuck with a shell-less egg?

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

Her toes are now curling, a new symptom and I’m incredibly concerned she’s in a lot of pain.

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

She ate her mash this morning as usual. I mix the layer mash with warm water in the mornings now that it’s snowing. I doubt she’s eaten anything besides the mash bc everything is under a blanket of snow right now. I’m in upstate NY. Her gurgling and panting is getting worse by the minute.

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

She’s making a gurgling noise when she breathes now, which she didn’t do when I brought her in.

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

Update- she gasped/made a raspy whisper sound and tried to flip herself onto her side, unsuccessfully.

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

Yes I was about to edit my post. I gave her sugar water and felt her crop when I brought her inside. She drink a fair amount when I dipped her beak. Her crop has some food but is soft and malleable. The girls get layer mash. When I lift her she does not try to hold herself up. She won’t bear any...

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

One of my ISA brown hens about 7 months old had been laying in the snow and all puffed up, eyes were open when I picked her up and brought her inside. The rest of her sisters were fine, hanging out in or under the coop where there is no snow. She didn’t perk up when I refilled the feeders and...

Khaki vs Welsh for dual purpose meat?

Might be regional. My khakis are slightly smaller than the welsh, or about the same size. Either way, I’m mainly making dog food, and occasionally roasting two whole birds at a time to feed a family of 4, or 4 breasts to a pot pie and bones/organs to the grinder, for example. More for every...

Khaki vs Welsh for dual purpose meat?

My duck flock has both khaki campbells and welsh harlequins (and a single pekin hen). This winter I’m looking to downsize to just one or the other breed (plus the pekin, she stays no matter what). Both breeds are listed as dual purpose. Which breed would be better for meat in the spring? I...

4 month old khaki drake mating, will the eggs be fertile?

Ok thanks. I’ll keep eating the eggs until I see a change in the germinal spot.

4 month old khaki drake mating, will the eggs be fertile?

The campbell with the most white patches lays the smallest egg, and we’ve seen him mate her a few times (they mated now while I typed this!) The duck with no white patches at all lays bigger eggs- witnessed mating once, but she is currently molting heavily and hasn’t laid in a while. The duck...

4 month old khaki drake mating, will the eggs be fertile?

How long after mating will they start laying the fertile eggs? He began mating them about 10 days ago.

4 month old khaki drake mating, will the eggs be fertile?

I have a 4 month old khaki campbell drake that has been mating, or at least that’s what it looks like, with 3 1.5 year old khaki campbell hens. The hens lay well. My question is more about the fertility of the drake- will these eggs be fertile? Can they be incubated? Or is he too young- like...
