Should I warn neighbor that dog might get shot?

Exactly. In my rural area, we have no AC, and the police won’t handle it. I called city hall and they said chickens are considered livestock, and any animal that is threatening them can be shot. My doctor’s wife watched as their neighbor’s dog jumped the fence caught a chicken, jumped back and...

Should I warn neighbor that dog might get shot?

I caught a dog that had killed several chickens, and told the owners they were lucky I didn’t shoot her, but next time, I would. And, I did. She was moving so I only got her in the shoulder, but it was Memorial Day weekend and I’m guessing the emergency vet 45 mins away cost a fortune. They put...

    Odd Question

My nest boxes are about 3' off the floor. What happens to the hatched chicks who want to leave the nest? I'm afraid a fall from the box will kill them, but that’s where my broody hen wants to be. Any remedies?

    Never in 43 years!!! Amazed!!!

Fire department? Tell them your cat‘s stuck up a tree. When they arrive, “Oh. Did I say cat? Silly me, I meant chicken.” Last week a dog got in my yard and was going after my chickens. It had already killed 4 of them a couple of weeks before. I got my gun. So, I suggested to the Fed Ex driver...

Watch her. She goes up in short increments. Chickens can’t fly very high. Mine use a lower step to get on their 5-6’ roost.

    WARNING to walk-in coop owners

My EX (emphasis on ex) used to walk through the house locking all the doors, during the day. Once, while bathing to go out, I realized the water softener was off, so threw on a light robe to go outside to reset it. Meanwhile, the ex locked all the doors and climbed into the shower. I was locked...

    WARNING to walk-in coop owners

You might want to replace the chicken wire with hardware cloth, while you’re at it. Chicken wire will only keep the birds, not predators, out. It’s too flimsy to stand up to them.

Why wasn't I warned.. not to build a coop, or heck get chickens... Oh well too late now. New build started this weekend.

Can I suggest a sectioned off area for new arrivals who come out of the brooder? I wish I had done that. It’s really helpful for integration or RE- integration if one has to recover.

Is the dog a Sheepadoodle? My neighbor has one, Lucy, and I LOVE her. She runs to see the girls when she escapes, scaring them to death, but she just wants to play.

No a/c but windows that open all the way for cross ventilation and open eaves w/hw cloth all around. They’ve never avoided sleeping inside from heat. Plus, I covered the plywood floor of the henhouse and bare floor of the run with it to keep varmints out.

Looks great. Mine‘s 8’ x 6’ with a 12x6 run. Good for 6 chickens without crowding. Great for 4. They’ll have lots of room, which is important. If you think this is getting out of hand, wait until you or wife sees breeds you MUST have! It’s called “chicken math”. They’re like potato chips. I’m...

Starting to get paranoid about using things like diatomaceous earth on my chickens :(

I don’t know why DE would be ineffective. I had fleas on my house and a good dusting eliminatEd them ALL! I put DE down whenever I clean the coop and it works well. I would use any toxins, especially ones that kill bees! They have enough problems, right now.

What do you do with your chickens when they die?

I don’t want them to attract predators to my living chickens, so I place them in a hearvy black plastic yard bag and take them to the dump. They’re already gone, so they don’t mind.
