Wondering if anyone out there has "mixed" flocks - I have added Emu chicks to my little bird farm and just curious if anyone else has a diverse flock on pasture together during the day? Chickens - Muscovery Ducks - Crested Pekins - Geese - and now Emu's during the day I want to let all of them...
All you experienced Emu hatchers out there, what is the average or expected mortality rate with Emu chicks?
I lost one a little over a week ago and tonight when I got home from work - there was a dead male chick in the shed.
So out of 10 chicks I have lost 2 so far 20%. I am wondering how...
My Emu's are about 3 weeks old - today I noticed that a few of them have areas on their backs where their down is missing - some more then others. I will take some pics and post this morning.
They have been sharing the shed with 10 baby geese about the same age - they sleep together and all...
I have a few of my new chicks eating and drinking -
Question: I put chopped up greens in the chick starter and in the water - they seem to love the greens but I don't see them eating the chick starter - should I be concerned?
Well I got lots of eggs from my girls their first year - Have four females and at least three were laying and one is actually on a nest (Embden). I let her keep the last 10eggs and she even has a couple Muscovy eggs that she is sitting on.
Hatched out 15 and sold them all and I have 26 more in...
To increase humidity levels how do you adjust the vents - top vent open = higher or lower humidity? I have been having problems with the dry winter air getting the humidity levels dialed in. There is a post out there that tells you how to adjust the vents, but I can"t find it.
I came home from work tonight and noticed that one of my ganders is bleeding around his penis - looks like it is hanging outside and bloody - Has anyone had the same issue - looks like he got hurt mating.
Well it's back to basics - Been tracking temp and humidity for the last 60 days thought I was doing everything correct.
Targeting 99.5* and 30 - 35 % humidity
If your instruments are not accurate it doesn't matter!
When you read the incubation guide the first thing is check your temps with...
In the Northeast it was 0 degrees last night - working with the ducks today I noticed one of my girls limping. Picked her up and her feet were frozen - I looked at all the other ducks - geese and chickens, everyone else is fine.
Question: is frost bite fatal? will she lose one or both feet...
My Geese gave me a Christmas present this year - 4 early eggs during Christmas week. Geese were only 8 months old so not expecting any eggs until spring (if then). Well thought I would put these in the incubator with my Muscovy eggs that I am learning with and I have one that is now 28 days...
Started setting eggs in December - hatched 7 ducks over the last week, but am getting a lot of DIS (dead in shell). Chicks are fully formed and just failed to internal PIP. The eggs that do PIP I am having good hatch rates.
Breading stock is all young birds first few months of lay - eggs may...
Was working playing with the Ducks today - thought I would post a couple of Pics.
My little guys first chance to clean his bill a play for a few minutes - One week old and today we have a few more with external PIP's
This big Drake had a piece of straw that looked like he had a...
This is my first time trying to incubate Muscovy eggs - Today I went to candle and I have two eggs that have internal PIP-ed and one that has external PIP - Was not expecting that at 29 days? My incubator may have been a little warm.
Can't wait (I'm like a little kid at Christmas) I am...
I kept 6 geese as breeders - 2 Ganders and 4 Geese, today I watched as one Gander mounted the second one in the pool (they both had their male parts exposed).
Question: Is this dominance behavior (please no gay jokes) ? It went on for a few minutes until one of the Ganders left the pool.
My Muscovy ducks have been laying daily for weeks now - I live in the Northeast and thought I would not get eggs until March/April. Ducks were born in May of this year.
10 ducks getting 4-5 eggs per day. I saved up 20 and placed in the incubator - got a few clears - two blood rings - and 13...
I have 6 Embden Geese one of the Ganders has always had a small area of feathers that are raised on the back of his head - My question is this a "tuft or a crest" or as I like to call it a "cowlick"
Hard to see in this picture - Center Gander
