    Big chickens becoming aggressive?

This year we purchased some day old light sussex chickens and put them under one of our silkies, Penny. Now, we have had small scuffles between the light sussex chooks before - nothing new - but now, at 26 weeks, give or take a bit, I've been told by the family that these two light sussex hens...

    Breeding questions?

Last year, around December, 15 weeks ago, we purchased four light sussex day olds, one of which was a cross breed (x arancuana). One of the light sussex (pure) we’re fairly sure is a rooster. It’s fairly obvious. Since three of them are related, if not by the hens (since there were several...

Is this light sussex definately a cockeral - soon to be rooster?

We've had all four chicks from day olds and we've noticed that one is looking remarkably different. Can anyone say from the pictures that it's definately a male? Or is just a odd hen? In comparison with same age light sussex pullet and light sussex cross Aracuana.

Is this a cockeral light sussex?

We got four babies about 6-8 weeks ago. Now, we're sure two of the white light sussex are hens. We have a feeling one is a cockeral. Also, we're not sure about the black one which is a light sussex x aracuana. All born days apart. The top two images are of the suspected cockeral. Not sure...

What are some tips to sexing young light sussex chicks?

So we're picking up some light sussex chicks next week. By then they should be between 4-7 days old. Are there any good indicators of gender? I know its hard but anything that would make a female seem more likely would be great.

Any tips for cleaning a mucky bum?

Okay, it's happened. Two of my Isa Brown's have developed the oh-so-glorious mucky bum (or whatever it's officially called) - any ideas? I don't have that salt stuff...so. Yeah. Help!?!?

The adventures of Penny and Lola

Two weeks ago we purchased a five week old white female silkie and named her Lola; she was separated with our broody 30 week old silkie Penny. We prayed that they would bond and, in their own coop, bond they did! From sleeping together... To Lola playing on Penny... And finally...

    Intergating a baby silkie

So we bought a five week old silkie a couple weeks ago and as the baby was picked on violently by the other chickens we separated her with the adult broody silkie, that has gone splendidly. That was two weeks ago. The baby is seven weeks old, and still small, which is what I expected. Both...

FUNKY SILKIES - POST YOUR PICTURES

We only have two but love them to bits. One is a 30 week old broody silkie (Penny) and is caring for a non-related 6 week old white silkie female (Lola). Penny doesn't have fluffy feet but Lola does. Lola and Penny getting on fabulously! Lola at 5 weeks. An old one of Penny at 16...

A new addition to the family!

So, for little over a couple months now, we've had our four darling chooks; Penny (Buff silkie), Mildred (Isa Brown), Girtrude (Isa Brown) and Henrietta (Silver laced speckled Wyandotte). So we purchased a new large white coop a few days ago but the ramp was too steep so dad...

Intergrating a five week old to an adult flock

We bought a 5 week old silkie today, a tiny little thing. We have four other chooks, two isas, 1 adult broody silkie and a older Wyandotte bantam. We kept the baby in the big coop for her to feed and settle while the others were free ranging. Now it's night and we've out them to bed, I hid the...

    Marks under the skin?

I'm aware that its considered normal for silkies, or perhaps simply hens in general, to sometimes have bald patches beneath? Right, well that isn't concerning me. What is, as I picked her up today, to check her over I noticed a slightly red patch beneath her skin, only tiny but misshapen. It...

How to prepare for new baby chicks

Tomorrow we will be picking up 3-4 new chicks tomorrow from a breeder, sexed and vaccinated. Our silkie, Penny, has been broody for almost 12 days now. Now we are in the middle of an Aussie winter on the coast, the lowest it drops where we are, at night did drop to zero Celsius but generally...

    Broody hen or Heat Lamp?

Ultimately, we have enough time to plan for either. So, just doing some info. We already have a darling silkie, 22 weeks, who is starting to be broody and will probably be 30 weeks (max) when we get the chicks. We decided to make sure she's broody, broody, before buying the babies - can't have...

What age do Silkies start to lay?

I'm aware they're terrible layers but knew they tended to start laying as late as 30 weeks - roughly what age do they lay?

Chickens sleeping in boxes at night D:

In their roosting area their boxes are attached and each night they go into them and sleep (and leave poo in it) and while I clean it out often, I wonder will they grow out of it? Currently the oldest is 17 weeks (a silky) and there is a younger SLW and two 10 week old isa browns - will they...

How well do these breeds fly?

So we have two 8 week old Isa browns, a silver laced wyandotte and a silky. How well do they fly? We're currently raising the height of the back fence; at the moment it's just over 1.3 metres high (roughly).
