    Sand Floor?

Hello, One of my girls has roundworm and while reading up on it, someone mentioned that a sand floor is better than dirt/soil b/c the worms don't (or can't????) live in the sand. Does anyone use sand in the bottom of their coop? If so, do you struggle w/ fleas or any other issues? Would you...

What has made my hen lose her equilibrium?

Hi. What was the outcome of this hen’s issue? My girl isn’t wobbly when walking (she is if jumping) but she seems disoriented. She didn’t come running out of the coop when I opened the door. Her food bowl was full. When I put it under her nose, she ate it. And drank. Poop is normal. When I hand...

    Protein boost needed? I'm confused

I would cook the meat to avoid any issues. Meal worms / black fly larvae are also good protein sources.

BROKEN FEATHERS - DEPLUMING MITES-MANGE- ANSWERS!

I noticed these broken feathers on my hen’s throat. I have not read a post that mentions this a particular area that mites like...I have not noticed itching nor I have I seen any bugs. I live in the heart of the city so my birds are not exposed to any wild birds. I read on this blog that...

How Much Would You Pay for a Glass Waterer?

Hi; thank you for responding. No, the waterer did not go into production and it doesn’t look like the glass waterer is feasible. There are no longer any US manufacturers w/ capability to produce it. Mexico has the closest production facility but I understand that the glass isn’t great quality...

    Protein boost needed? I'm confused

I noticed a problem w/ eating eggs and also thin egg shells right before a molt. Not sure if a coincidence or not BUT ...a poster suggested hanging a "curtain" in the nesting box and this totally stopped the egg eating - bizarre, I know but I think it has something to do w/ them believing their...

    Egg eating maddness!!!!

So, I've left the curtain and there has been no egg eating. Has anyone been successful removing the curtain or does it need to stay there indefinitely?

How Many Waterers do you Have?

I have a shelf full of waterers that I've tried and didn't like and have now limited my waterers to two in the coop plus one pie plate in the yard for when they free-range (they have never run out of water). How many waterers do your chickens have access to?

    Egg eating maddness!!!!

Thanks everyone. I increased their protein which worked for a few days and then didn't work. So then I tried the curtain and voilla! ..no egg eating for two days! And then, all three of them started laying in the nesting box w/ no curtain (2 nesting boxes in my coop). But still, no egg-eating...

    Egg eating maddness!!!!

Thank you. Was just about to order meal worms when I found this great post so i'll be ordering "tasty grubs" aka black soldier fly larvae: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/posts/add/threadId/947725 I have some nuts (and eggs) I can give her in the interim. The odd thing is, she is only...

Source for US made dried mealworms?

Thanks for this great info. I disagree w/ above post that if a product doesn't say where it's from, it's from the US. Most companies (regardless of product produced) proudly proclaim that they are made in the US as it is a great marketing tool and the product is generally recognized as safe. Be...

    Egg eating maddness!!!!

Thank you. Ordering meal worms right now :) I have some nuts (and eggs) I can give her in the interim. The odd thing is, she is only eating her own egg. She leaves the other two (for now). Thx again!!

    Egg eating maddness!!!!

And, do I need to worry about salmonella spreading throughout the coop from the raw egg?

    Egg eating maddness!!!!

One of my girls is also eating her eggs. At first, I found a sticky mess and thought an egg broke by accident. Then there was a sticky mess w/ shell leftover for two days and tonight I saw her peck it open right after she laid it. Since she is leaving the shell, I presume this is a protein...

Why is my Chicken Walking Backwards?

Thanks so much Azygous. I thought the fuzzy things on the side of her face were her ears and the flappy part was the lobe. I had no idea there was a hole back there! I'll check her again tomorrow and hopefully that will do the trick. I haven't noticed any head scratching.
