After raccoon (?) attack care for rooster

Gunther is recovering nicely. He’s moving his right wing more and crowing regularly. The hens are doing well too.

After raccoon (?) attack care for rooster

thanks for this. The new coop is completely secured with 1/2” chicken wire and they’re all getting electrolytes and vitamins. He ate a tiny bit of moistened food because I know hydration is the most important thing for him right now. I’m going to put him back in the crate and put some neosporin...

After raccoon (?) attack care for rooster

Well, the terrible thing happened. We went out Friday morning to feed our 24 chickens and found all but six chickens had been killed. I'd like advice on care for the rooster and identifying the predator. We have a secure coop with an automatic door into a fenced and covered but not completely...

It’s been a wild summer. We had a couple osprey living next door, then an eagle attacked a hen. Gunther the rooster scared it off and newly named “Lucky” is recovered and back in with the flock. The chickens have worms, so we’re treating them with valbazen that we had on hand. Those of you on...

I’d prefer something smaller and clever. Mostly I need a hawk alarm. we’re butchering them all this year, and if we decide we’re up for it, we’ll get some ewes to breed and raise our own flock next year. I would love to raise them for dairy (dorpers aren’t the best breed for that, but they are...

Thank you! I think you’re a little far away for me. I would travel about an hour from Olympia.

We got sheep yesterday! They should be ready for the table in a few months. We have tons of apple cleanup to do. I hope some of them stay on the trees long enough to make cider! Sadly, Gunther’s days are numbered. He goes for weeks as a good chicken, and then he’ll pretty randomly attack...

    Uncooperative broody hen

She wasn’t roaming around. I separated her in the orchard so she couldn’t sit in the nest box all day. This thread is almost a week old. They’re all doing great.

    Uncooperative broody hen

I moved her back into the brooder box when she was sleepy and put the chicks under her a little later last night. Today they’re all happy together. 🥰 I could tell the chicks were a little older because they had some feathers on their wings, but I didn’t realize just how much until I got home and...

    Uncooperative broody hen

But not in the way you’d expect. One of my cuckoo marans has been broody for over two weeks now. Every day I’ve been moving her out of the nest box and blocking her from returning. She would hang out in the nice big orchard with food and water with two other broody hens (!) and my buff Orpington...

Is anyone near enough to Olympia to buy some layer feed from me for .41/lb? I bought 300 lbs then decided to get chicks and can’t feed the calcium any more. 🙄 Mill date was February, so I don’t want it to go bad.

Lots of cooking for me too today. I finally made King Arthur Flour’s cinnamon rolls. They’re sooooo good! Took forever though. I don’t think I’ll make them again.

Those ones didn’t work well because the top part was too wide. And the interface was too thick. So I made more with cutting assistance from my spouse before bed and got them on the three worst hens. I added another inch to the elastic and I shouldn’t have. I’ll tie a tiny knot in it tomorrow to...

Well, I made five. The first one got all messed up because the interface was sticky and caught on the foot. So I left the paper on the other until I turned them inside out and was able to make five successfully. I’ll try these out and see how they work.

The cheepos are on the roost with Buffo and the other big birds tonight! I hope they’re warm enough. They’re only about five weeks old and the Orpingtons still have fluff on their heads. I hope they’ll be warm enough. They were out in the rain all day today too. 😳

I’m really torn. It was wonderful to have the bright sunny weather, but there were at least two brush fires last weekend, and that’s really not good.

Today I’m making six (!) chicken saddles for my flock. I’ve found a few how-tos and patterns, and I have a few questions: what difference does the shape make? Some of them have little extended curved area at the corners. Does that help keep is smooth for the wings or something? It seems like...

A feed store here in Olympia has oyster pellets of some sort. They were $.50 per lb bulk or bagged, but now it’s about $40 per 50 lb bag. I asked the last time I was there, and the guy said one of the major oyster shell companies closed because of the pandemic and then had to relicense and had a...
