Just look at that adorable little head peeking out next to those lazy little pink turkey feet and that fluffy turkey butt! Can you believe these things grow up to be so huge and bald? They love the mama heat pad!
My DH says I am all done till next year. I was asking if perhaps I could hatching the fall and have some POL pullets available for spring, but he says no. And that I am crazy!
My turkeys are hatching! My staggered hatch worked out! Since humidity was a problem during the first part of hatch last week, I let it run dry for the rest of the week. Success! There are now 2 fluffy turkey poults and a third pipping, if all hatch here that's 4 out of 5 turkey eggs! Woohoo!
Hatching mostly done! I was concerned about humidity this time because it spiked when we had rain 2 weeks ago and I had a hard time getting it down where I wanted . Next time I will open up more vents! So far one turkey hatched and one dis turkey, with 3 more this weekend. The chicks are done...
Looking forward to poults this weekend. Someone asked about buying them, but I can't say I have enough experience with them. Around work, I sell off extra chicks to help pay for my chicken addiction. I only have a few turkey and the babies are so delicate!
Candled my staggered turkey eggs. All 5 are going strong! Tossed out another 2 cream Legbar eggs, now have 4 Marans and 11 cream Legbar eggs left, with lockdown happening this coming Thursday for 2 turkey eggs and the 15 chicken eggs. The other 3 turkey eggs are for a week later.
Both pics have examples of male and female legbars. In the newborn chick pic, the female has the distinct chipmunk stripes and has more brown, with mascara and no dot or the spot contained within the v of the head marking. Males have large white headspots and are generally greyed out and the...
My burbon red hen went broody yesterday on 11 turkey eggs in an old dogiloo doghouse! I have the entrance half blocked by turning it into the fence and then I made a narrow hall from some old wood and made it like a tunnel and so that dog can't get to them, and the turkeys just love laying along...
Tossed out 9 clears, but all the turkey eggs appear to have veining and 2 of the eggs were positively jumping inside! One turkey egg looked like a weird lava lamp, only in rhythm to its heartbeat. The chicken eggs that are left are veining nicely but it is always hard to tell veining on Marans...
My 'biggest helpers' pause for a moment. Both have poop i have to clean, get into trouble often, follow me around everywhere...
Molly the dog does a good job keeping smaller predators away. Lucille is my little princess.
Candled my oldest turkey egg, and it's wiggly in there! It's day ten for the first turkey egg. The other eggs aren't ready to candle yet, I set the chicken eggs on Saturday and one turkey egg on last Wednesday and 3 more on this last Saturday. I think I finally made a nest that the turkeys both...
This makes me want to take a trip to Wyoming. Good fried food can be hard to find, and my DH almost always has tummy troubles after anything fried. He's got IBS..... Don't tell him I said so...
Gah! That dog is sitting behind me now, offgassing! Anyone have a cork? Could that stuff be harnessed as fuel for a propane tank? It's enough to make you wish you didn't have a sense of smell! Sometimes I wish dogs didn't find raw eggs so tasty...XP
