Gah! I thought I had more time! This is my first time with a broody turkey, but all the broody hens have stayed on for 6 or 8 weeks with the babies.
The setup is hardware cloth separating main flock and grow out chicks (4-8wks). Hardware cloth separating chicks and broody mama. So they live in...
Thank you! They are in an enclosed box where the mama was sitting as a nest (it's a plastic dog/cat crate). I wasn't clear before though, they are in a separate pen from the rest of the flock. I have many different barn sections for chicks, breeding projects, etc. So when she went broody she got...
Congrats on all the new chicks!
I have a question on a predicament tonight in the big coop. I have a turkey hen who went broody, first time mom. Her turkey eggs were infertile, so I gave her baby chicks. They are now about 4 weeks old, but not very feathered at all. Partial wing feathers, but...
today is hatch day! of 16, so far 14 have hatched.
2 more have pips, but they pipped late, so I'm giving them more time and leaving them in the incubator
here are some of the babies!
putting 16 more in the incubator today
now those are some great prizes! I would love to win some of those hatching eggs!!!!
sorry I understand.. my turkey eggs are all infertile... no idea why my tom isn't getting the job done.. nowhere near as hard as dead in shell though :( were they positioned properly?

I think that is just great!
anecdotally... I know of someone who taught their 4 year old that chicken nuggets come from baby chicks. and that hamburgers are from baby cows. which sent her into hysterics, and she's now a vegetarian!
when he is old enough I plan to teach him about the circle...
he loves the chickens, and is scared of the turkeys. we have one super sweet, friendly hen who is a Salmon Faverolles. she allows him to carry and pet her, it's the cutest thing
Bahaha you crack me up!
I have so many hens that want to go broody... trade ya.
I think that's great. I have a little one too, but he is too young to really comprehend anything yet. I love the idea of exposing kids to the circle of life from an early age.
YAY!! hatch babies hatch!
she is so sweet! that is wonderful that you are teaching her about incubating. I hope you hatch lots of chicks!
Once you start lockdown, be sure not to open the incubator. it's important once they start hatching that the humidity stays high, opening the incubator...
Set day = day 0
24hrs later = day 1
start lockdown on day 18...
if 5/10/16 = day 21
then 5/7/15 (Saturday) = day 18
for lockdown, you want to increase the humidity to about 60%.
remove the turner and lay the eggs on their side.
I like to candle the eggs and mark the air cells with a...
yeah, the head spot indicates male from what they have on their website
Green Magnolias - Auto-sexing green egg layers! Females will be darker at hatch, with no dot on their head. Males will be slightly lighter with big dots on the top of their heads.
that's what I'm thinking too! leaning...

I won half a dozen eggs from the easter HAL contest from @MyPetChicken .....

hi! Welcome!!!
one thing you can do to make weighing easier, is to weigh the entire dozen at a time and calculate weight loss that way. easier than each one individually!
personally I incubate a lot.. and weighing is too much work!
yay! I love SFs and BCMs. welcome!
they are so lovely! I have...
