Well, I wasn't sure what to call it exactly. "Unethical" just came to mind so I described it that way. However, that does sound very liken to animal rights mumbo-jumbo, which I detest. I guess I would do better to say that such a cross is "mismanaged stewardship" of the Sumatra's bloodlines...

Nice birds! Looks like the cock has some AG blood or something 'cause his comb is quite large and lumpy (for a pea-comb). Nice coloration on him. Am I right that you're crossing Jersey Giants to Black Sumatras to try to improve your Sumatras? Forgive me for saying this, but that is very...

A very nice looking rooster, but like Pop said, far from what a Thai should be. Way too stocky. Looks like a Sumatra/Cornish cross, but also like Pop said, the white earlobes suggest something additional. All in all, though not a purebred Thai by any means, your cockerel was a fine yard...

Those are beautiful birds, Sandy. I don't know much about Shamo bantams but yours are gorgeous nonetheless.

Thanks everyone for your opinions on the "Saipans." I wish they were a more standardized breed and that there were more breeders out there. I wonder if the stuff in hatcheries has no Saipan blood at all? If Saipans are so rare then hatcheries probably never got ahold of the real deal. I'm back...

Anybody know the quality of these birds? I found them on Craigslist. The guy said they are Saipans. Any thoughts? Think they could be a good buy? These aren't my birds, but they look like nice Saipans and since the guy is selling them for a reasonable price I'm thinking about buying...

Gosh, how can anyone afford prices like that? I guess somebody can because otherwise no one would sell birds for prices that high.

I wasn't suggesting that I or anybody else should start making them easier to keep. That's madness, and all you have to do is look at hatchery "Orientals" to see where that leads you. I guess I should have said that I wish I had the financial aid that would make keeping them less difficult...

Wow, that's some pretty high prices--way beyond my pay grade too I guess you either have to be semi-wealthy or very dedicated to afford birds like that. I wish they were easier (and cheaper) to raise. Maybe they would be more popular among your common poultry people.

I've never seen a real standard for Malays, standard or bantam, but that is a very nice looking bird. Love that BBR coloration.

Yeah, where did Fowlafoot go? I think Prairiechicken disappeared, too. Sad because they had some great birds. Doc has bantam Malays. Not sure what progress he's making though because he hasn't uploaded many pics of them (I think I've seen only one picture).

Shooting the dog once it gets back on your property would be sufficient. After all, in the words of a well-known BYC member, "A dog on its owner's property is a pet; but a dog on someone else's property is a predator." You could also demand he keep his dog confined. A friend of mine had a dog...

Sound advice, sir. Unfortunately I had to find this out the hard way with my cock. Thank Heaven he isn't too game, but he's definitely cock-of-the-walk, and I'm certain that if he ever spent too much time in an enclosed space with my non-game roosters, he'd kill them. He recently got in a spat...

Thanks! I'll reckon he's about two feet tall or so when fully erect. Though completely hard feathered, he carries himself rather low for most Orientals. Sort of reminds me of a Saipan or a Thai in his carriage. Daniel on this thread thinks he may have some Burmese in him because of the Silver...

Haha, I wish I could, but I haven't heard of any Sumatra breeders in my area. I would prefer to cross him to Sumatras because I don't care for the single-comb of the phoenixes. Plus I seem to be under the impression that Phoenixes are not very hardy--I could be wrong though...

I must agree with everyone else: stunning rooster! His stance reminds me a lot of my own cock.

Nice hen, Nate! Glad to see your Shamo project is coming along well. Is the hen broody in this pic? Spangled is one of my favorite chicken colors, too. Spangled Russian Orloffs and Spangled Old English Games are some of the most beautifully colored birds I know of. After Spangled, I think...
