Not Nicalandia, but yes, that will produce sex-linked chicks. With sex-linked genes in poultry, males can have two alleles per locus because they have a zz sex chromosome, but females are limited to one allele because they have a zw sex chromosome, the 'w' not allowing for another allele on...

Not nicalandia or NatJ, but I'm guessing the adult hen is an incompletely or poorly marked silver Columbian or Db bird. I can't say I'm confident in saying what her exact genotype would be, or whether she has any additional pattern genes. I just know sometimes poorly marked db restricted birds...

@Egg Snatcher If it helps, Nicalandia made a post on the allelic mutations of mottling a while back. Like- years ago. Some of the photos have since become unviewable. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/observations-on-mottling-and-its-many-allelic-mutations.1331859/ Someone else can...

Ahh. Thanks for sharing. 😅 I mistook dark khakis for light ones, apparently. I learned of Dun/Khaki through polish chickens, which might've skewed my perception of it. I've only actually seen one light khaki polish, most of the others were a tone similar to the guy below(not my photo). When you...

Do you have any photos of darker khaki birds 👀 ? I’ve only seen photos of light khaki polish(that whitish look with a brown tint), which is ridiculously pretty, but I’m curious to see a darker khaki.

Then this is ER down? Chicks pictured are the same birds, just younger. They were all striped as chicks so I could not tell what that implied. I wasn’t aware if under modifiers, ER could be striped. Also, from everything I’ve heard and red, these birds have the charcoal gene.

Are they incompletely spangled then? I’m not fully understanding how they have the pretty solid white bodies but only show spotting on their chests, undersides, and somewhat in their tails.

@nicalandia Hello. I have several black crested white polish from Ideal. All of them show spotting, reminiscent of the spangling of the spitzhauben, on their chests, undersides, and hackles. Some have it venture further into their bodies, but most of them have clear white feathers on their...

Thanks for the extra reference, saving it for future use. It sort of makes sense now; but also because as soon as Nicalandia said the difference, I looked up a bunch of hatchery photos of eb breeds vs e+ ones. @nicalandia I also appreciate you telling me; never made sense until now how people...

Given you know, I’m quite curious; how do you tell the difference between e+ down and eb down?

If your barred rock is double-barred, all of his offspring will be barred; if he is single-barred, 50% of either sex will be barred, the other 50% being solid black. If you cross him to the australorp, all of the offspring will be black. Crossing him to the ameraucana will produce 50% black and...

How does the autosexing of biefelders and 55 flowery hens work? I mean; how is it that males are so much lighter? I assume it’s barring, but why would the barring lighten the whole body of males as chicks? I thought all it did was add a headspot. I know 55 flowery have mottling too, but...

This is dominant right, white? Chick is golden- white, looks way different than silver chicks I've hatched before. I have one hen in the flock with dominant white, just wasn't expecting her to mother anything from this hatch..

I have this same thing occurring in my flock of red bantam cochin/silkie crosses, if its alright to chime in. I’ve never seen it mature to anything more than just a dark gray beak, and the rest of the skin remains light, but that being said I currently only have one adult with the trait. I...

Thank you all for the responses. I wasn’t sure if birds could have polydactyly but not show it. What a confusing gene. Should I assume some of the chicks who don’t show it also carry it, and I’ll have to deal with this for a while?

I have some questions about polydactyly, relating to my bantam cochin/silkie crosses. Mostly what it boils down to is: am I dealing with dominant or recessive polydactyly? Also an explanation to how the gene works would be great, if it isn’t too much to ask. Also, am I just missing any signs of...

I hatched out some more chicks from my bantam cochin/bantam cochin silkie mix flock, and I think I got more silkied chicks? I just want other thoughts on the matter, I don’t like making assumptions by myself. 3 have super frayed wing feathering so far, way more excessive than the feathering of...

I don't know exactly what gender it is, but I would guess female based off of the genetics, and that some of it's brothers are showing combs now. All of the cockerels I have do have light legs. I have 9 chicks from that rooster right now, about the same age as the one pictured. It's the only...

I have a bantam Cochin chick with gray legs. Trying to figure out why- all of my adult cochin bantams have white or yellow legs. I understand the dermis color gene is sex-linked, so males can be Id/id+. I got photos of the father and the chick, the father looks white—legged to me, but does...
