Looks awesome - I like the Straw bed- is this a mat from an evap cooler? either way looks easy to clean/replace. The staples in the corner might be an issue. What's the back bracket for? and how many chicks? All in all, looks good.

I love this idea! And its huge. No need to rebuild as they get to the awkward stages of being to small for the flock, but too big for the new chicks.

Ahhh Sensai; the wisdom of the experienced wasted on the exuberant. It took exactly 10 days for these chicks to grow out of this Mini Coop-R. I did not build another larger version however. As a means to start introducing them to the flock I made a cage of 2" x 4" welded wire fencing so it...

This looks Amazing! If JoAnn had seen this before I built our coop, it wouldn't only be the brooder that would look this good. Please post photos for us when you are done with the conversion.

Update on the brooder light: Ace hardware for Appliance bulbs- 60 watts, small size bulb but the same size base so it fits in the lamp socket I already have. BTW, even the manager told me they didn't have incandescent bulbs and haven't had them for years. They were hanging next to the energy...

Ed and aart: Thank you for the input, I found a halogen puck light, about the size of an old flash bulb and a bathroom vanity light -you know, the big round "movie star" dressing room like light that is still incandescent. I will be trying this first- before I sacrifice my JoAnn's precious...

Ed, JoAnn and I went to Del's Tractor Supply today looking for an alternative to the CFL and LED lamps, but the only thing they had were the 150w, 250w and 350w flood heat lamps. I asked about them and the counter person stated that in this climate, they needed to be at least 36 inches up off...

aart: Not really designed to hold them long. First, we are in Hawaii- Temps in our part of the island stay constant at about 80-85 year round. Nights only dip to 75-80 when it does get 'cooler' Second, this is for our Cornish crosses- they will be out of the brooder sooner than most breeds...

Mini Coop R Okay, here is my contribution for a brooder. JoAnn and I live on the Big Island and some of you know that we had the distinction of having not one but two hurricanes barreling down on us this week (Madeline and Lester). THANKFULLY, neither of then posed a problem where we are on...
