It's happening again: 10 morning eggs from 8 duck ladies. No dilemma whether I missed them yesterday because they are all nicely together. Well, I'm not complaining (just boosting the grain/pellets servings).
EDIT: +1 unsuccessful one in the afternoon
Ummm....
a week or so back there was a disturbance in the force and our 8 duck ladies laid 4 eggs for 2 days, as though it were suddenly winter again (it's far from that, very warm actually). Not molting.
... followed by several days of normal production (7 or 8) ...
... and today i collected...
It was a surprise because in general he's not aggressive toward people or bossy with hens, he's very much a make love not war guy. He does make A LOT of love - the other hens seem happy about that, but this one, not so much.
We suddenly have 5 instead of 6 eggs daily. I think it's because of a sad love situation. One hen is stressed out because the drake keeps chasing her even when she's not returning the interest. She complains loudly and runs away, even when he's got her by the neck she manages to flee. He's not...
Oh there are several, this is just an area close to the house where they are not normally invited in order to keep the grass in OK shape over winter ... They were invited now for an easier photo session :)
As we have seen before - complaining in the forum works! Immediately after I mentioned the sudden drop to 3, the very next day we got 4 and now we're back to the regular 5.
If one can be a duck whisperer, am I the duck Karen?
The pellets that they have been receiving since spring are 5,8% calcium and 20,5% protein. This, combined with various grains and corn 2:1, is their main food. There have been some bouncy eggs when they first started laying but not for several months now.
My worry about peas was that maybe...
Things getting a bit unusual with us...
We have been getting 5 eggs per day, with an occasional 4, all winter so far. But now - when the days have already noticeably lengthened, the weather has turned more user-friendly and the neighbors' chickens are starting to up their production - we've had...
15 F and the regular 5 eggs. Thick ice on ducks' basins, buckets, etc. Brought warm clean water from the house. Not something I'd want to do every day but some parts of the pump froze due to me not being sufficiently prepared :(
We're somehow back to 5 eggs :) (last two days).
Today was a very cold night and morning for our location ; set up an outside shelter for ducks on woiden pallets with a tarp and lots of hay. they seem to have liked it. Had to break ice in basins / kiddie pools several times over the day.
It's not particularly cold, just above freezing, so all the rain and snow will just end up as the kingdom of mud. I wonder how the grass in the orchard will manage to grow back in the spring - I would imagine the ducks will snatch every green thing as it pops up... My guess is that the only...
