I went to turn my eggs earlier and there was no heat in my cabinet incubator... I hope the eggs don't mind a long, cool cooling period! It was 73 degrees! Sometimes I think the universe doesn't want me to have a million silkies. I promise I won't keep them all!
Congrats on the surprise chicks!! I think I can spot one or two in the photo! My Salmon Faverolle hen just went broody yesterday for the second time ever. She is a wonderful mama.
I saw a craigslist ad someone posted on Facebook that had pregnant chickens for sale. It is hilarious but I just can hardly believe it. Especially because they actually owned chickens and was apparently waiting for them to birth some chicks!
I will say there are certain tidbits of information...
Sounds good! Sometimes broodies together are a death trap for eggs and chicks. They can be so busy fighting with each other that they don't even take care of their babies. If I really want eggs to hatch, then I separate the broodies but then it's hard to reintegrate them.
I have two girls...
So sweet! I hand feed mine when they are tiny by dropping food into a bowl from my fingers. I think they like food best when it is moving and I have had the most poults survive when I did it that way.
Look at that ones feet all black!!!!! me want!!! me want!!!! cool egg!!! what breed pups are great! :) I have been getting some cute duckies this season! Sometimes their spots are just adorable! That egg was from a Silkie. I set it just to see what would happen... Maybe it will be...
I have had eggs I was going to set and then didn't for a week or two, then finally decided to put them in with newer eggs and was surprised to find that they did equally well! These were tiny eggs too, I would think that the bigger eggs would be viable for longer. I have a soft spot for...
I have 3 more broodies! Two of them just hatched chicks a month ago. One of them went and then the next one laid an egg and stayed put on it today. They have been known to fight over eggs so I gave them each a basket to sit on. Hopefully that will work. They can switch baskets, I just hope...
Looks like I have 4 ducklings out.. A couple chocolate, a blue and I think a lilac, I'm thinking about keeping those last two. ;) The last two ducks I kept are big enough to to hang with the flock during the day so that is nice that they are getting along!
I just hatched one Silkie so far...
I have one Silkie out. It looks silvery/lavender with yellow wing tips and feet.... Can't wait till it's fluffy!! One black showgirl is almost hatched. One tiny Serama too, from a micro frizzle egg.
I have 3 silkies almost day 18. Duck eggs are sleeping.
