Went to visit my JBBA district director yesterday to talk birds and came home with these. They are still a little frazzled from the trip, and wobbly sitting on our hands, and my poor photographing ability. So you have to forgive them a little in these pics.
Consultree, if you are wanting eggs from quality birds 6 really isn't enough as you can expect 25% of them to not hatch. Of the ones that hatch expect 33% to be culls due to long legs. You are looking at 2 or 3 chicks to keep assuming a 100% hatch on the eggs that will hatch.
Barred is the variety in Japanese. Barring is also sex linked if I remember correctly. So all chicks from this cock bird should have barring. Again if I rmember correctly about barring being sex linked.
My Japs do just fine in the Northern KY/Cincinnati OH area without and additional heat. They are housed in a chain link coop with roof and 2 sides covered with tarps. Have had no issues with any of the bantams which are all housed this way.
Did you mean vaccinated for Mareks?
I went out the other day and my young (1 year old) grey rooster was dead in the coop. No signs of foul play (no pun intended). No signs prior that anything was wrong.
He was going with some older hens and some young project birds this spring. Old man will have to do for now.
I guess I will...

NYREDS I appreciate your comments. Actually wish you gave more details sometimes. I came to the site to learn about show quality birds, but it just seems to be these are my birds posts and they are pretty. Those post are ok, but I want to know about type and color to better interpret the...
Lemon blue is what I thought, but thought the color was too dark. Yes there is plenty more to fix. They are first generation Jap x OEG. Will have to take them back to Jap a fee more generations to work on type.
Any suggestion as to the color of the 2 pullets (center & right)? I like the lighter on in the front. They both have short legs but might be able to be a little shorter. Will have to work on that. My attempt at making blues.
