    Surviving Minnesota!

We actually got rain last night/yesterday, not sure how much, but it was measurable. Unfortunately, the storm that came with it had baseball size hail! It hit more in the Lake City, Wabasha, Buffalo City/Cochrane(WI), area, but they did get some in Ridgeway that size which is far too close to...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Blech, we could use some sun any day now! This weekend sounds like it SHOULD be nice if they don't change their minds day of :he

    Surviving Minnesota!

Didn't even know it was supposed to rain here last night and woke up to the thunder around 12:30/1am which I don't even normally do. Then it started sounding like harder water. I watched peas size hail for a bit before deciding it was slowing up and that I didn't need to put my car in. Went...

    Surviving Minnesota!

We have some butternut by us, but I don't think many anymore. My mom remembers many more trees when she was younger. I'm almost as far south as you can go in MN.

    Surviving Minnesota!

We were at about 82 Sunday, 80 Monday, high 70's yesterday, and 73 today in SE MN. The lakes/rivers have been thawed for probably almost a month here already. They keep saying rain, and I think today we might get some. The next week is looking much cooler though, back to the low/mid 50's- to...

    Surviving Minnesota!

I know how dux go down in this thread, but my lovely ladies thought they would outsmart the snow and fly over it. After they landed up there I think they realized they were so very wrong.

    Surviving Minnesota!

Down here in the Miami of MN we only had about an inch that stuck, maybe a bit less. Either way, it was mostly melted and gone this morning. The roads on my way home last night were sure slippery though, yuck, way too soon for this! Hope everyone else was safe yesterday as well. The first...

    Surviving Minnesota!

I had a male bobwhite show up in my yard a couple years ago. He ran around on the roof of my hog barn that my chickens are in one night, and I never heard from him again. I'm guessing he was an intentional or accidental release. I think they can be found in the wild in Winona/Houston/Fillmore...

    Surviving Minnesota!

We got another 1-2 inches here yesterday. I wish I could share it with you all in the dry areas!

    Surviving Minnesota!

I'm not sure why we are so different than the northern parts of the state, but I think we've gotten at least 8 inches of rain this spring. My boyfriend was upset on Saturday because they said rain was supposed to start at 2 pm, and he had hay down. We can't get the hay up before it gets rained...

    Surviving Minnesota!

I feel the same, they seem so sad all winter. The ducks don't mind it, but sometimes the chickens don't even want to come out to drink water and just eat some snow and go back in. I opened up a new area to them inside so they could at least wander around a bit more since they refuse to hang...

    Surviving Minnesota!

It was pretty cool, really shook things up for a few days lol! In other news, I'm already over winter, and I know there's still a few good snow storms, and well below zero temps lurking around a few corners before spring. :hit

    Surviving Minnesota!

A couple weeks back Winona was all in a tizzy because Winona Ryder was in town filming for a Super Bowl commercial. It was just rumor at first, but then they started putting up extra signs, and people spotted her around town. They put up a fake Welcome to Winona sign right across from my...

    Surviving Minnesota!

We got 3 or 4 inches of snow overnight Tues into Wed, and now it was single digits this morning! I'm not ready. My corner of the state has some pretty nice deer. My cousin got a very nice 19 pointer maybe going on 10 years ago off my great gpas land. I'm pretty sure is was over 200 lbs...

    Surviving Minnesota!

I know someone with some elk, and they are proposing some new fencing rules, and I'm pretty sure they are just going to sell. I think the farms are where this started, or perpetuated, as far as I understand. We have a deer park in my town and they are talking of euthing all the deer and...

    Surviving Minnesota!

It's illegal in my area (Winona, and Houston counties for sure) because of CWD. It's been a couple years now, but I was hearing of people getting busted quite a bit at first. Old habits die hard I guess.

    Surviving Minnesota!

Winona is right! We had three found in the same neighborhood in the same day recently I believe! That's what happens when people want to build houses in their habitat, just like anything else  I've lived in Winona my whole life and have never seen one, so I've never been all too...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Nope, this has very soft silky leaves and gets those yellow flowers on it. They get a crown shaped type seed pod on them. That is a picture of Velvet-leaf, and they have a slightly heart shaped leaf in real life if I remember right. Burdock are just big old green leaves and are a pain the butt.

    Surviving Minnesota!

This is what we always called Elephant Ear. My mom said it is called Velvet-leaf, and is invasive in MN.

    Surviving Minnesota!

The gnats are horrendous here this year. There are huge clouds of them all over the yard. I can't walk to my car without one buzzing in my ear. Thank goodness for Buggins, if I didn't have that I wouldn't even want to be outside. Vanilla does work, it just doesn't last as long as buggins. I...
