    Peeps in Europe!

I lost 2 chicks after hatch last night, leaving me 5 little survivors in total

    Peeps in Europe!

Gosh, in a nutshell, hatched 5 ducklings (only one of which looks like a Khaki Campbell) and so far 2 chicks. We're down to 7 live chicks, after some didn't develop, quit and died right at the end, one this evening, before it finished hatching. Shipped eggs suck :( I'm assisting them and waiting...

I'll do that, thanks! Fingers crossed for both our hatches :fl Good grief, my mind is full of the Andalusian eggs, which is my first attempt at hatching shipped eggs! I forgot to mention I have 6 Khaki Campbell ducks due to hatch that weekend as well

I think I may start next year. Still working on building up the flock at the moment! :) I have some Andalusian eggs cooking at the moment, they are due in 2 weeks.

    Peeps in Europe!

I can say I'm ready for spring, but we barely had winter so far. About a week of real cold, a bit of snow twice. But for the ridiculously short days you would've have known it was mid-winter here! Oh you should! She sounds like a fantastic layer and if she passes that trait on to her chicks...

How is everyone doing? We're enjoying our spring break in February over here, yesterday's high was 16C! Can't believe this time last year we were bracing for our biggest snowfall in 30 years.

:th We're having spring weather here too and apparently it's going to last for awhile still.

    Peeps in Europe!

I toss kitchen scraps and more out onto the compost heap for birds to pick through. My hens are usually first in line. It adds some "interesting" to their diets. I believe the practice is banned for bigger farms because of health concerns. If people can cut corners on feed costs... Talking of...

Oh no... That's a bit worrying! Can you get Carbaryl? I used that in S.A. for my chickens and their coop and it's brilliant stuff. Unfortunately it's N/A in Ireland though. You can add it to water to make a spray to treat coops, roosts, nest boxes and runs as well.

Our weather is great this week too. Up to 13C some days, little rain, lots of sunshine :) I hope we're not going to get billed for this heat in the coming weeks. Last year from end of February onwards was interesting to say the least...

    Peeps in Europe!

Ugh, welcome to Ireland? Hard to imagine a few months ago it was so dry here. We had no rain for 5 weeks! Keeping chickens confined here is tricky, with the rain and mud. I let my two free range over my massive backyard, so they are fine, but in a smaller space I can see drainage and mud would...

    Peeps in Europe!

It snowed overnight, but switched to rain this morning and rained most of the day, with some fierce wind. I fed my hens inside the shed where they sleep at night, as they don't want to come out in this cold, wet nonsense. It's been a crazy week weather wise. Snow, clear and sunny, rain. What's...

    Peeps in Europe!

When I first moved here we lived in west Cork, where snow is not that common, but it happens. We asked a few people what the chances were of getting snow and every one of them gave us the exact same answer: "It NEVER snows here! But it did two years ago" A few weeks into winter we had a...

It's snowing in Ireland... First I've seen this winter. Had a great evening with my overexcited 12yo lad playing in it :) The Met Alert office is messing with us:
